Airline Ticket Name?

Soon2beMrsB, on May 16, 2017 at 10:22 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 26

We're getting married July 1st but not honeymooning until the end of July. I plan on changing my name right after our wedding but not my passport until after our trip. Any advice on if I can still use my maiden name to book the trip and use my passport or should I make all the reservations in my married name?

*side note* my ID expires before my honeymoon that's why I'm not waiting until after the honeymoon to change my name.

All of your tickets must match your legal documents. You will not be able to board the plane or cruise or whatever if your ticket has a different name than your passport or ID, even if you are only planning on hyphenating.

Wait to change your name until after the honeymoon.

I know all my information has to match, my ID is expiring before our honeymoon so that's why it will be updated to my married name but my passport is staying in my maiden name for the time being. That's why I was asking if it would be okay to just use the passport in my maiden name for travel purposes or if I should just go ahead and book my tickets in my married name.

If you will have your new ID by the time you leave then married. If you're going out of the country then maiden. You could always call the airline and change the name if you need to. Just check their policy

If your ID expiring is the only reason you want to change your name before the honeymoon, just renew your license when it expires then pay the $20 or whatever it is to get a new one when you change your name after the honeymoon. Simple.

As far as I know your passport needs to reflect your legal name, and what you are suggesting that wouldn't be the case. I have no idea what the legal ramifications are, but I'm guessing it would be a huge headache if something were to happen and your names don't match.

ETA are you traveling internationally or are you staying in the US?

As long as you book in whatever name is on your passport you will be fine. I haven't gotten a new passport and we have flown twice and crossed border twice with no issues. I have never been asked for secondary ID.

How long does it take to get a copy of your marriage license? We won't get ours back for 6 to 8 weeks after the wedding ( California) so you may not be able to change your license right away anyway

I would just wait. As much as I want to change my name asap, I'm waiting until after our honeymoon (which isn't until September) because so much can go wrong. You don't want to be stuck out of the country and have complications with identification.

I wouldn't count on being able to change your license in one month. I had to wait several weeks to get my marriage certificate back, then go to the social security office to have my name legally changed, and then I was able to go get my new drivers license.

If your traveling to Puerto Rico, you won't need your passport. FH and I went last year and we thought we would need passports, but after doing some quick research, we discovered otherwise. The only way you would need a passport would be if your flight had connections in another country.

You don't need a passport to go to Puerto Rico as that is part of the United States. Given your timeline I doubt you will be able to have an official ID with your new last name, although every state is different. In CA, we have to have a certificated copy of our marriage license before we can change our name on our social security card, once the name change is reflected in the social security system then we can apply for a new drivers license. The turn around time to get the certified copy itself was 3-4 weeks alone when I spoke to the clerk.

You need to plan to renew your license in your maiden name and then change it after your honeymoon. I know it's sucks since you'll have to pay the fee but You will not be permitted to travel if your passport doesn't match your legal name. Also, typically airlines cannot change names anymore, so please don't buy tix in one name and plan to change them. That used to be possible but it is not anymore.

I travel domestically and internationally regularly and am also a travel agent part time. I have seen so many people run into problems with these things. In the end, it will be worth it to spend the extra $20 to change your license rather than risk major complications.

Book everything in your maiden name and wait until after the honeymoon to change your name! I promise you will not have enough time to get married and legally change your name within a month! First you need to wait to get your marriage license (took ours 2.5 weeks), then you have to start the process with Social Security (fastest possible turnaround would be 10 business days), THEN you can change your license at the DMV.

This is way too fast (if not impossible) of a turnaround time and will stress you out unnecessarily!!

You won't have enough time. You have to get your marriage certificate and change your name with Social Security BEFORE you could even change your license.

I booked my honeymoon tickets under my married name but that's because we got married in April and are honeymooning in August. I plan to submit the passport paperwork by Friday and have to allow up to 8 weeks for a new passport.

You should wait til after the honeymoon cause honestly it'll save you a headache.

I would just renew your ID with your current name now and replace everything at once after the honeymoon.

Getting married in August. Honeymoon in November. Waiting until after to change my name. There's really no rush. I'm keeping my maiden name at work as well. I've been there 23 years.

@WWLynnie- depends where she is. We turned our certificate in right after our marriage (went to office, didn't mail it) and we got our copies and everything someday. went to SS the next day and had my new SS card within four days. I had most everything changed within two weeks.

BUT @OP - Puerto Rico is a US territory - you don't need a passport. If your ID will in fact be changed you can book in your married name BUT I do agree if everyone that you should just renew your ID with your maiden name and book in your maiden name just in case.

If your name change takes longer than you expect but your booked in your married name you'll be screwed. Don't take the chance.
