Alcohol Across State Lines

Chelsea, on October 11, 2020 at 12:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Anyone know a thing or two about transporting alcohol?

I'm from Virginia, but I'm getting married in North Carolina (I live 5 mins from the NC line). I'd planned to stock up on my fav Viognier when my local winery does their Spring sale. I guess I didn't consider that I'd be transporting a significant amount of wine across state lines.

I've tried looking up the codes for NC, but found a lot of fuzzy answers. Anyone done this before? Is there a permit you can apply for?

Hi I live in NC, they have some strict laws on alcohol here. I’m not sure about over state lines but I would google it just to be sure.

I have actually never thought about this. I can't imagine it would be a problem. My mom has bought lots of muscadine wine in NC and brought it back home, brought wine down for Christmas, etc. I flew with a bottle of wine a few weeks ago. My FIL goes to a 'whiskey weekend' where they all bring stuff. I can't imagine this would be a problem.

I'm not an expert and I know there are many laws regarding selling alcohol over state lines but it never occurred to me that there might be rules about transporting it once it has already been purchased, especially for private use. I live in MD and both myself and my family have gone to DE to purchase alcohol (I did it sometimes in college because we were close to the state line and my family has done it for events where we were going to need a lot) because there is no sales tax.

The only reason I know is because my FH is a police officer! From my understanding, it’s fine as long as it is an amount for personal consumption. If I have enough wine for 120 people, I may seem suspicious, haha!

I’m just going to call NC ABC and get the scoop to be safe.

Is it still considered "personal consumption" if you're not re-selling it? I hope it's all fine!

I talked to NC ABC today, and they told me I’m fine as long as it’s less than 50 liters!
