Alcohol at LDS reception

My FH and I are both LDS, both from part member families, and neither of us drink alcohol. His mother requested, almost demanded, that we have alcohol at the reception. Neither me or my FH wants alcohol at the reception. His mother seems to be a very forceful woman and I don't want to start off with a rocky relationship with my mother-in-law, but how do I tell her that alcohol will not be provided or allowed at the reception?

That is not exactly true Miss S. When I was still catering, somehow one of our vegan menus got posted on (I think) About.com, which resulted in my company getting gobloads of calls about vegan weddings. And you know what? Not one of those weddings ended up with no meat/chicken/fish. Not one. No, we didn't do roast sucking pigs carved to order, but we served beef (you can feed the most people with the least animals perishing) and chicken and cheese products. Because again, no, it's not all about you, and if it is, and your beliefs are deep enough not to compromise (this isn't a bad thing, just a statement of fact) then you have a small party with your family. Because guests #150-200 are not going to be happy. And it's bad hosting.

Speaking as a vegetarian, we served chicken and beef at our wedding. Because the reception is about the guests and making sure that they are properly hosted. We also had a vegan option, a no-dairy option (one of my cousins is lactose intolerant), and a gluten free option.

Would I have loved a completely vegan wedding? Sure. But I'm also not about to push my beliefs on others.

Op question: in the LDS beliefs is it against your morals to be providing alcohol? Or just for you to personally drink?

Because if it is against your religion to be around / provide it for others then I do see the dilemma here.

However if it is more about you not consuming it personally then I would say offer beer and wine to guests

Sorry I just don't know much about LDS

@ flying soon. That's exactly what I said. Mormons don't purchase things on Sunday. I love it when people don't want to confuse their opinions with facts.

I'm LDS as well. If you and your fiance do not want alcohol at your weddigthen that is entirely your choice, and I would suggest having your fiance talk to his mother about it to try to avoid any issues. I know at my wedding there will likely be some alcohol regardless of my being LDS because none of my guests that I have planned for will be LDS because no one in my family or his are, and neither are any of the guests that I have planned to invite are either.

Lol @Nancy resorting to calling swin snarky because she's eloquently giving her pov on something she knows very well yet nancy keeps saying she doesn't know shit.

Nancy, you're the one being snarky and a bit rude. It's not for you to question someone's dedication to their religion because you asked someone else. Unbelievable.

Melissa- Nancy isn't the OP. She just knows LDS members so thinks she's an expert.

I would just say something like we've already discussed it and made our decision. Thank you for your input.

@ Melissa I didn't ask one person. I live and teach in a heavily Mormon populated area. Mormons don't drink alcohol, or drinks with caffeine. They also don't play with face cards or shop on Sunday. end of subject.

@Nancy - the caffeine-related Word of Wisdom is very confusing, and many Mormons interpret it differently. I'm not LDS...but I live in the church's headquarter city and have talked at length numerous times with my LDS friends about these issues. Mormons don't drink tea or coffee...but many of them do drink energy drinks, soda, and herbal tea. It just all kind of depends on how that person personally interprets it. Let me tell you....we have soda shops dedicated entirely to fully-caffeineated creations: cherry cokes, peach mountain dews, etc. They are very successful here.

As for the "face cards" thing - that's just gambling. And again...many Mormons interpret it differently. I have friends who refuse to even bet dinner on the outcome of something. And then I have other LDS friends who will play a full game of poker with you so long as there is a buy in cap that is fairly low.

The Mormons you know and talk to may interpret or adhere to things more strictly. But that definitely doesn't mean they all do.

@Nancy did you seriously revive a dead thread to continue this argument, in which you are trying to tell someone about their own religion?!?!?
