All the hype

Finally, someone wants to marry me. I’m 40, never been married, and have always dreamed of this day. But now that the planning for MY wedding is unfolding, I’m not feeling that excitement. Instead, I’m feeling dreadful about all the extra money everything costs. Is this day worth all the hype?

I can relate. I got engaged for the first time ever at 40 and I am now 41. My fiance is 50 and never married either. People think I deserve a wedding with all the bells and whistles. I have stressed over the costs but I’ve managed so far to make the planning work to keep the guest list to about80 people. I found a dj and photographer for a very affordable price. I am not doing a bridal shower and no reception dinner to save on costs.

If you don’t want to go the full wedding planner route you can checkout Jamie Wolfer on YouTube, she’s a wedding planner and has tons of videos breaking down all the different aspects of planning your own wedding on a budget.

So many 10000 of dollars later I question the same thing every time I break out my credit card especially at this age. However, I have come to the conclusion that it is.

First of all, congrats!! Smiley ring Second, depending on what you want, yes, it is largely worth the hype. The key is to not let yourself get too overwhelmed at times, and remember to breathe and to take a little time for yourself. The beginning can be a bit daunting, but if you figure out a plan and keep all your options open, you can go into each next step with a clear head and an open heart.

Trust me if I had a ton of money I would go ALL OUT, but I don’t have any extra to even put down on things right now so it’s just going to be what it is. I think we are making some progress though! We got this!

It’s crazy. Being older, I’ve seen all but like 2 get divorced already at least once. I mean is marriage like a car. Some buy brand new and they last a lifetime, some buy used and beat up and bring them back to life, and some just rent and return for a new one later 😂🤦🏼‍♀️ All I know is, it’s super easy to get married but not that easy to get divorced so why spend all this money if it’s not guaranteed. Sheeeesh lol 😂

Oh wow! Well I am look forward to a long term and successful marriage. I know more married couples than divorced they are my inspiration. I simply wish the event itself wasn’t costing a small fortune.

I am trying to go in this marriage as long lasting and has a solid foundation of trust, communication, and loyalty. We’ve been dating for 4 years and have a house and share bills together and we aren’t getting any younger lol! I hope the best for you and your big day Smiley smile

It sounds like you have the foundations of a successful union. Just cut out all the negative chatter about divorce. Some people divorce because their foundation was rocky in the first place and should never have gotten married. But it sounds like you are off to a good start!

We’ve thought about that but he says he’s so proud to show his family his new beautiful life with his princess 😍 he’s definitely the sweetest man alive I think because I’ve been with a few “winners” who were serious let downs but his actions go beyond his words. But honestly, do what feels right in your gut.

First off, Congratulations! Secondly, it really depends on your preferences. I used to think it was so dumb to spend more than 10K on a wedding because all I could think was I’d rather vacation with that money or add to my closets.. but once we decided to do it that changed. Now, it HAS to be over the top on everything (for both of us, not just me- he’s ridiculous! I had to draw the line at the ice sculpture 🤦🏻‍♀️ )
Some things I’ve learned along the way:
Plan in silence. The more family/friends you talk to, the more people want to give their opinions which is so annoying and stressful- especially if you are an independent person. Besides, you’d be surprised to find out how ugly people can get over your happiness. Hire professionals if you can. If not, have a solid person you can trust to take charge. Overall, it’s worth it. I mean your GETTING MARRIED! Be excited! Don’t be afraid to be extra AF! And if YOU and your FH are paying for it, what YOU say GOES! Also.. small side note.. getting a great DJ is so essential. Get one that has experience with events and weddings but also has great taste in music. I never knew before our DJ asked me for specifics that there is a song for EVERYTHING. Weddings are like musicals without the corny choreography. Who knew 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is awesome! Thank you for that inspiration. Yes I am trying to plan all my ideas on a vision board then going to present it to my bridesmaids and maybe hire a wedding planner. I teach, I coach, and I run a side business as well so I like have no time. Except weekends when I’m not doing laundry or vacuuming 🤦🏼‍♀️🙄. Yea good idea on putting your foot down on an ice sculpture. That’s a little much 😂 My man thinks backyard weddings still cost under $2000. He’s cute! Smiley winking
