All Wedding Dresses Look Bad On Me!

Jennifer, on November 7, 2019 at 2:15 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

I was dreading going dress shopping. I didn't want the sale people fussing over me and saying "lets try this, lets try that...this style, that style", cause theres only so many times I can say "no, I don't like that". lol. So I tried on a few, HATED them. They all look frumpy and clumpy and uncomfortable. I just ordered one from Davids Bridal and I love the style, the color and everything but the top, again, its frumpy. Are getting your dresses altered a 'must'? Did anyone else hate try on dresses?

Alterations are often necessary, whether it be the hem, bringing in the waist, adding/removing sleeves, it could be anything. Did you order this one from David's Bridal online or in stores? They have a very finnicky return policy, so I would be careful.

I didn't have the best time trying on dresses. Not because I thought they all looked bad on me, they just didn't feel like the right one. The fitting room attendant I had the first time was nice, but she made me feel like I didn't have to have that "this is the one" moment and I settled for a dress I barely liked. The second attendant I had after returning the first dress for a store credit was actually the manager and she was way too overbearing. I had one dress I saw online that I wanted to try and next thing I know she brought me 7-8 more dresses (half of which were out of the price range I told her). After trying on 3, I just told her I needed to take a breather and that I was done for the day. I'm actually ordering my dress from Azazie at the end of this month rather than David's.

I had my dress custom made by a local dressmaker. Perhaps you could look into doing that or altering the dress you bought so you like it better?

I ordered online. But I called first to make sure what the return policy was and I can get store credit. Which is fine cause I'm sure if this goes back I will be getting a dress from there anyways.

I didn’t love shopping. Alterations will help a lot and are absolutely necessary but have you gone outside your comfort zone to try on different styles and colors? I didn’t like a lot of all white/ivory (I guess I’m not traditional). I did better with separates—white lace nude top with an ivory skirt. Maybe try blush or even a black & white dress? BHLDN has dresses that don’t overly bridal you could try. Or maybe even a shop that sells formal or prom dresses might be more your style?

I was never super enthused to try on dresses. I hate dresses. White looks terrible on me because I'm pale. I'm plus-sized. Wedding dresses are everything I hate because they're white, heavy, fluffy and uncomfortable. Not to mention expensive.

With that being said, I did find that A-Line dresses are pretty universally flattering and that satin is a lot more forgiving than other fabrics. I also ended up with a dress that has a dropped waist and corset back. I do need to get alterations on the length of the dress, but overall, I'm happy enough. You wouldn't be able to tell by the pictures we took. My face is just a look of "can this please be over yet."

Good luck finding a dress that you like. Try cuts that you normally wouldn't. You never know how it will look until you actually try it on.
