Allergic reaction to eucalyptus branches?

Melanie, on March 10, 2018 at 11:25 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 10

Has anyone ever heard of anyone having an allergic reaction to eucalyptus branches used as a runner along a long table? Have you been to a wedding with it and did you even notice the smell?

I asked my florist and she said that she'd only heard of people having an issue when they either 1) are touching the stems, like in a bouquet, or 2) have it in a boutonniere/corsage that is near their face all day long.

I have a waking nightmare that everyone swells up and we have to strip the tables before the ceremony is even over.

This is about the amount that will be on the table:

Eucalyptus does have a smell to it and some people don't like it. I caught a bouquet with that in it and i was not able have it in the same room with me . i think it will depend on the amount used and where it is used.

I personally love the look of eucalyptus but cannot stand the smell of it Smiley sad and yes some people can be allergic, my lil brother has bad allergies and breaks out in hives if he touches it or many other plants Smiley sad you could always ask guests ahead of time if they have specific allergies to it? If you dont have too many guests that is, it would be hard to ask 100 plus people :/

Eucalyptus is known to produce a lot of oil which some people can be allergic to. I am very sensitive and eucalyptus oil makes me break out with hives. So if I were to touch the plant then then I would have a reaction to it. If people are sensitive to smells, this may also be a problem, though many flowers and greenery have a fragrance so that tends to be unavoidable at weddings.

People aren’t going to be touching your flowers unless they’re bridesmaids so I don’t think you have anything to worry about. I’m sure people are allergic to it but no more so than the percentage of people allergic to any other random flower

We had garlands that included eucalyptus. They draped over the pews at the ceremony and then were used as our reception centerpieces. They had the distinct smell of eucalyptus but to my knowledge no one had a problem with them.

In my experience (floral designer) some people have mild reactions to smelling eucalyptus or flowers in general. I have noticed it is worse if they already have a cold/stuffy nose. That being said, I would still use the garland. People with serious allergies will know most weddings have fresh flowers and greenery and will know how to manage their symptoms.

My grandmother is deathly allergic to eucalyptus but she loves it and hated that I absolutely LOVE it, because she thought I wouldn't have it at the wedding! But luckily they have fake/artificial eucalyptus and if I continue as plan to have it, I will be doing!

I’m allergic to eucalyptus but as long as I don’t touch it I’m generally fine other than some stuffiness. A friend had it at her wedding recently and some landed on the ground and I accidentally kicked it onto my foot. Had a rash but nothing as bad you’re fearing.

I was concerned about that, as well, as my fiance has real issues with strong scented flowers (anything, really). Ironically, we're having our wedding in an Italian Garden, but it's outside, so he'll be fine. However, as the reception will be indoors for several hours, I'm looking for artificial garland to use on our tables. That way I can keep using the garland for holidays at home, as well. The roses I'll be tucking into the garland will be real, but not strongly scented enough to cause him issues.
