Allergic to eyeshadow?? Wedding day options?

Grace, on June 13, 2019 at 11:25 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 9
So I’m hoping I’m not the only one out there, but I typically am not able to use eyeshadow in my makeup routine because I end up with watery eyes and redness..like I have an allergic reaction of some sort? That being said I have only ever used drugstore makeup so maybe that’s my issue?

Has anyone else had this problem before and is there a solution? I’d really like to wear something for my wedding day to make me look a little more glammed up!

ANY ideas y’all have would be appreciated 😍

Have you talked to a dermatologist about this? My FSIL has really sensitive eyes, so she uses hypoallergenic brushes & washes them pretty much daily with a good cleaner. She uses Burt's Bees, Bare Minerals, Neutrogena ("sensitive" products), and Clinique. I'd try testing those now, to see how you react to them!

Talking with your dermo is a great idea. For me, it's trial and error. The products I've had the WORST reactions to were Neutrogena HYPO-ALLERGENIC/sensitive.... Clearly, they weren't that for me.

I'm sensitive to a lot of makeup too. Mascara and eye shadow use to make my eyes red and itchy. I use Mary Kay products it's the only thing that I have found that works. I know it's a bit more expensive but it seems to work.

One of my friends is highly allergic to most makeup, but Korres works for her. I think you can find it at Sephora.

I've had allergic reactions to one mascara and one eye shadow palette. But I wear other brands and other products daily. If you've tried several different brands (including the gentler ones, like Almay and Neutrogena) and still have issues, you may want to talk to an allergist. FWIW, I know a lot of women rave about Bare Minerals, but every powder product they make breaks me out terribly. Something they use is something I'm quite sensitive to. So not every "gentle" brand works for everyone. But using good, clean brushes and keeping all your makeup and brushes stored outside the bathroom are also important things to consider. Bathrooms have too much moisture, usually, which breeds bacterial growth, and flushing the toilet with the seat up can lead to aerosolized bacteria.

I have issues with many eyeshadows too. Try health food stores, I use a brand I found at Natural grocers that doesn't stay on too well but also doesn't give me a rash, so

You’re probably allergic to certain ingredients in brands you used. Without comparing them all, it’s hard to say which ingredients. Do you know what brands you used? If you had a bad reaction to a powder shadow, try cream eyeshadows (their formulations are quite different). Did you notice if it happens with specific colors? It could be allergy to a specific pigment or dye.

I’m personally not a fan of eyeshadow & don’t find that it brings much to my overall look. So if I couldn’t use it, I would skip it & amp up eyeliner & mascara & maybe just use some cream highlighter under brow bone.

My mom has super sensitive skin and the only makeup she can wear is from Young Living and Arbonne. Everything else makes her want to itch her face off. 😬
