Allergic to makeup? Maybe

Rachelxoxo, on October 26, 2017 at 6:02 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

I've had an eye allergy for an entire year! At first my eye Dr thought it was due to my contacts. He thought I had GPC but after wearing glasses for 2 months it never went away. I switched to hypoallergenic makeup and it got better but not all the way gone. I went a week without makeup and it's still not gone. But maybe that's it? I love makeup and can't imagine not wearing it for my wedding. I guess I'm just venting. I just really upset. Does anyone have this problem?

I had a very very very similar problem. It turns out I was allergic to my contact solution and eye drops for seasonal allergies (The brand changed its formula and I had no idea...oops!).

Have you gone to an allergist? This could help. I had to special request my makeup from my HMUA they were very accommodating.

That's my next option to do. The only thing about going to an allergist is that it is not covered under my insurance. But it would be worth it. My eye doctor said that there is no long term effect. Did your eyes have bumps under the eye lid?

Those sound like styes to me.

My eyelids were swollen and my eyeballs ached (gross, I know) and I had horrible ocular migraines.

Can you go to another eye doctor for a second opinion before you go out of network?

I've been to three eye doctors... They all said I had this https://emedicine.medscape.com/article/1191467-overview but there are countless of causes

Do you use the little latex sponge applicators that come with eyeshadows or latex sponges to apply foundation? I had swollen eyelids (sometimes so bad I had to go on short course steroid therapy) for years, till I got allergy tested and was told I was allergic to latex.

It wasn't the makeup but the applicator. I was smearing latex particles over my face every day. When I switched to brushes, I was fine.

I do use those! I'm using steroid drops right now for some relief. I do notice it more during the fall season too. This may be a very obvious question but are allergy tests 100% accurate?

My little sister started having a lot of eye issues a few years ago. She went to a whole bunch of different places to try and find out what's wrong. Turns out she has an autoimmune disorder that causes her to not produce enough tears, and her eyes get tiny scratches on them from decreased lubrication, and then they get irritated. She takes special eye drops now and it's pretty much not an issue! Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of exactly what she has!

You don't even need to get the allergy tests to try to see if it is the latex. You do have to get rid of any makeup you have used the latex applicators on (consider them contaminated) and get new product. Then throw away the applicator in the new one and use brushes. If the reaction settles down, you have solved the problem.

I do not have that problem, but I would definitely get an appointment to talk to an allergist and maybe dermatologist, too. Your wedding is just under a year away, so if you can figure this out now, wedding makeup may not be a problem!

I am allergic to make up and the allergy tests can't say which specific ingredients are causing the reaction unfortunately.

Allergy tests are accurate. They can miss allergies that they don't test for and you can develop an allergy later on, but they are accurate at the time. Have you ever been tested for a latex allergy? They are more common than you would expect.
