Allergy to nickel in my white gold ring

Sarah, on November 21, 2019 at 12:43 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6
Hi all! I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem that I am having. I got engaged Christmas Eve last year (2018) and was wearing my ring for about 6 months or so before my finger started to break out into itchy bumps. I have a nickel allergy and until this happened, I had no idea that there was nickel in white gold. I dealt with it for a couple months, until maybe a month and a half ago decided to take it into Kay to see what we can do. They sent it out to get it re-coated and within a week of getting it back it happened again. Now, I may have to upgrade to a platinum band. We took it in a second time, and the guy said if the ring wasn’t bought as is, it would be cheaper because I could just take the diamond off of my current ring and place it onto a new platinum band similar to my white gold one. Should I get a second opinion? I don’t see why they wouldn’t just take my diamond and set it onto something else, even if the ring was sold “as is” (minus resizing). Any advice would be amazing! I still have about 10.5 months until our day, but want to get this headache out of the way sooner rather than later!

I'm a little confused. Are you trying to return the setting and then just take a new platinum setting and put in your diamond and pay the difference? I'd be surprised if Kay would do that. They're notorious for being strict. I'd look into a smaller local jeweler to change the ring. My husband used a family heirloom diamond, added 4 smaller diamonds on the side (like .2ct) and had it made it rose gold at a local jeweler and it was only $800. Platinum would be more expensive but you wouldnt be adding diamonds. I think local is where it's at.

I would take it to a smaller jewelry store that is more use to custom orders or one that makes their own jewelry and I’m sure they will be able to help you. These large chain stores have too many rules.

Hey there, Sarah! I’m really sorry to hear this happened Smiley sad

I would also recommend you bring the ring for a second opinion to a store who do custom rings and see if there is something else they can do for you.

Let us know how it gets resolved!

I have a silver ring because I was scared whitegoldwould do this to me (10K and 18K make me itch). So far no regrets and way better for the budget

Any jeweler (not a big chain like Kay, but a shop with actual jewelry artists) should be able to take your stone and put it in whatever setting/metal you want. Unless you are trying to get some warranty claim on it, I'd skip the box stores and find a reputable, local jewelry maker to do this work for you.

Thank you all!! I just got my ring back, so cross your fingers it won’t irritate me again. If it does, it’s extremely nice to know I have options of going to other places!❤️
