Alterations at David's Bridal

Sarah, on June 25, 2020 at 3:51 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13
Hey y'all,

So I bought my dress, second dress tbh, but that's another story 🙃
I bought it at David's while visiting my family in Michigan and it's being shipped to Texas for the fitting and then shipped backed to Michigan for the wedding. I've heard that David's alterations are ridiculously expensive compared to finding a good seamstress elsewhere but I'm clueless in most things girly and wouldn't know where to start finding a quality seamstress. Plus, David's is doing me a solid by shipping it back to Michigan for me so I don't have to stress about ruining it on accident...I'm more than a little accident prone 😕 So, my question is does anyone have experience with bridal alterations at David's and can you give a guesstimate so I can budget correctly? Thank you all in advance! Love yall 💓

I wish I had known they would ship dresses...I had to ship mine between CO and NC. I’m a small person and I get alterations done often at various shops on my normal clothes and special occasion dresses, so I wasn’t surprised at all by the price and actually thought it would cost more. Hem was $200 for five layers of tulle and lace, 7 point bustle was $99, cap sleeves were $40, and having bra cups sewn in was $20.

Yes, them shipping for me is a lifesaver! So, are those prices at David's or a different shop? Thank you for your response!

Sorry, those prices were at David’s. At other seamstresses in the past I’ve paid $20 for work pants or jean hems, $100 to have a bodice taken in, $90 for a simple one layer dress hem. So I thought the prices at DB were fair.

I have my first DB alterations appointment Saturday and I’m hoping not to spend more then $350. I need to have my dress hemmed, taken in at the waist and potential adding cups. I can let you know what prices they give me Saturday

I just had my alterations appointment at David's and it went amazing! With the shapeware and bra i wore it fit just about perfectly already so disclaimer there. I got a hem for 4 or 5 layers (cant remember) for $150 and a piece of boning in the back to hook my bra strap down under my dress (it peeked out just a tiny bit) and it came out to $165 for everything. I could have had my waist come in a bit, but i decided against it because I tend to bloat really bad and i wanted to leave that extra room in just in case. I also bought a pettticoat which completed the look! Everything came out to only $216, which for me was very reasonable. My dress was originally $599 on sale for $487 with a appointment discount so I was very happy with my savings.

Where at in Texas? I’m in Corpus Christi and have an AMAZING seamstress who is crazy reasonable for alterations, and fast too!

I had my fitting appt at DB last week. I needed it hemmed, and it’s 2 layers I think. Top layer is lace. It also needed taking in in 2 places on the side of my chest so that my bra wouldn’t show at all. 10 point bustle. And they’re also moving the hook at my zipper up just a touch to be sure the back of my bra doesn’t peek out (this was no charge, just a note on the order). Totally was $305, but considering my dress was originally $500 and I paid $99 and really I returned a pair of $99 trekking poles next door to REI the day I bought my dress, I still stayed at my $300 dress budget.

Thank you for this! I was a little worried about how much I would pay but also being in NC and being able to see this helped me to budget!

I don’t feel that they were high compared to a local seamstress. I did not get an exact quote from the seamstress in my town, but I saw her starting prices for wedding dresses and I felt like they were in line with David’s Bridal, plus DB cleaned it after alterations for me, which was important to me since I bought off the rack.
