Alterations - What did you change?

My boutique (Chernaya Bridal House in Miami - highly recommend!) offered detachable cap sleeves and a detachable crinoline under skirt all included, as well as pretty much anything else I want done to it. Too many options. 🙈 Leads me to my follow up question. The dress in the first picture is the one I chose. I am considering altering the neckline from the mild sweetheart it is now, to the deeper sweetheart shown in the second photo. Am I just changing things because they told me I could or do you all think it would look better that way? I do lean towards it but also don’t want to mess too much with a good thing.

My dress was fit and flare when I tried it on in the store and then a complete mermaid (the style changed between when I tried on the rack and when it went into production). I had them remove the train when I ordered it (they had to know beforehand because the lace couldn't be cut after production). When it came in it was strapless and super mermaid and too short (you could see my shoes when I was just standing). I had also picked out different shapewear. The designer/company and I spent an hour in the dressing room with me and them pinning the skirt. They even had me sign a waiver because I was changing their design so much. When it came in, it was so amazing. They added lace straps and built up the lace in the back, and it became a modified a-line/fit and flare. I was so happy.

    How it came in:

I was thinking half up half down, something romantic and simple! That’s a really good point about the hair!

Oh I’m sure you’re right about that! That is probably what happens in a lot of cases. But wow thank you, what a nice thing to say about the dress! I really fell in love with it. And if I change nothing, I’ll still love it. ☺️

It’s really nice to have the option, you totally should! They seem restrictive to wear all night long but look so pretty in photos etc that I loved the idea of detachable ones.

Wow love this!! I can’t believe they made you sign a waiver lol. But bravo on the changes because it looks like you ended up with a dream dress. What a unique and lovely color too.

    Thank you so much!

I can't take credit for the overall design and color (Vera is a genius) but it definitely helped that I had done costume design and taught a sewing class in school, so I had an idea both of what was possible in alterations as well as what would be more flattering. Some changes you need to ask for before they put the order in.

They ended up having to completely recut the dress from new fabric...but since they cut it too short to begin with, they would have had to anyway. I also imagine they didn't get too many orders for the lavender/lilac color.

Oh it’s Vera Wang? Love it. 😍 so strange they made it too short to start with! A rare mistake I’d imagine.

I think the second dress looks much more like you with the neckline! I will say the only alteration I’ll be getting on my dress is sheer half sleeves for decoration on my shoulders. Otherwise I got very lucky!

I changed a A- line dress to a trumpet. The seamstress did a great job. It can be done. I have a long lace jacket that goes over and now it has some dimensions that were lost with the a-line.

Absolutely gorgeous dress. It is a great look with either neckline and I'm trying to decide on the same situation for myself.

You are a beautiful bride. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

I really like the second neckline. I'd figure out how much all of the alterations will cost and see if its worth it to you. I'd also really like to see some before and after examples of that work by your seamstress before committing to making that change. The neckline is such an obvious part of your dress and any imperfections - such as asymmetries, uneven stitching, etc - will be very noticeable. Also once you chop off fabric you can't just add it back. So I'd want to be SUPER confident that the seamstress was going to do the alterations to my standard before committing to them, because that's one alteration you really can't go back from if you don't like the end result.

That is a great point because yes there seems to be no going back if I start getting rid of fabric lol. The cost of all alteration is included in the price of the dress so that’s handy.
I was feeling okay about it because my boutique is one where other area boutiques will send dresses for alteration if they have no in house seamstress. But honestly thanks to your suggestion, I’d still prefer to see some before and afters. So thank you! 🙂
