Altering illusion neckline

mzj, on January 5, 2017 at 4:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

I went dress shopping with my mom which I knew might not work out well in my favor but she wanted to go and I felt bad not including her. My mother is very "old school" and wasn't a fan at all of most of the dresses available as she found them all to look "Naked." The dress that she fell in love with has an illusion neckline and I honestly hate how high up it comes, so I plan to cut down the netting and maybe restitch it along the flower appliqués.

With how much my mother loves the dress I honestly could not disappoint her by choosing a different dress. I understand it "my wedding dress" but I feel strongly about it.

Has anyone modified an illusion neckline to make it shorter/smaller/less so? Any Pics would be awesome.

Very pretty dress! I don't know anything about altering the neckline. Is it uncomfortable? I ask because you can't really see the illusion part at all.

The dress is beautiful!! Kinda looks like mine haha (illusion neckline... and lace is my jam).

Do you like the straps? What if you altered it to make it strapless?

I don't mind the straps. It's just how high up the netting comes lol. I like the intricacy of the dress and I do like the gown enough to buy it. I just prefer it not to be so covered

Hmm..I didn't think of that. Like maybe it wouldn't lay flat anymore once it was cut? The netting doesn't show much on he model because she's pale, but I'm olive/tan so the white netting pops out. It also doesn't come in a nude netting option Smiley sad I'm just tryin to make it work because I wouldn't feel right not picking it after my mom about cried when she saw it lol.

    Illusions/netting is hard.

If you're going to alter the illusion neckline- I'd take it off completely and replace it with straps.

I've worked with "invisible" mesh before for dance costumes- and it's REALLY hard to get it to lay right- you start cutting it up and it's going to shift the way things pull and it may very well ruin it and you'd have to cut it off entirely.

In which case- just buy that version of the dress with straps- because- I'm sure it exists.

Could it be transformed into a one shoulder neckline? That would eliminate some of those flowers on the left, but I could see how it would be done.

Ditto JoRocka-illusion mesh is REALLY tricky. I'm hoping you don't mean to DIY-I can tell you from experience this is one thing to leave to the pros!

That said, find a good alterations person and they can help give you ideas, probably even fold things or hold up different fabric to give you a better visual idea.

I think its sweet that you want to please your mom but I think if you were honest with her she would probably want you to have a dress that you love. I would keep looking.

I see. Thanks guys. I think my only concern on waiting longer is because I'm cutting it close on ordering and making sure it gets here in time with alterations. I've visited all the stores in the area..I need to pick something soon.

I would see if you can find someone to do the alterations before you purchase. I had a bridesmaids dress that had illusion netting at the top, and I wanted it altered. The seamstress refused to do it because she didn't think she could get it to look right. Of course, I procrastinated in the alterations, so I was stuck with it like that. See if you can find someone who thinks they can handle the job before you actually purchase. If no one is willing to attempt it, you might need another plan.
