Alternative flooring for dirt backyard reception

Stephanie, on November 5, 2014 at 12:59 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

I'm having my reception in my backyard. Growing grass isn't really an option, and I want to keep it as cheap as possible. The back yard is dirt. It's a hard surface. I'd like to find something cheaper than synthetic grass to cover it with. I need a surface because my dress touches the ground and I don't want my dress and guests to get filthy. Does anyone have any ideas to cover it up with? I need to cover in an area that is about 1000 square ft. Thanks!

Synethic grass and carpet can run close to the same pricing but it looks better to have grass than carpet outside, in my opinion. anything cheaper might be tarp. but to very pretty. the synthetic grass you could keep after and it would be pretty. but cheaper options will only look cheap.

This is a neat idea to use, once again, with synthetic grass. For the wood "pavers" I would just use shipping pallets that have been stained and sealed...those are easy to get and usually free if you drive around industrial areas near you...most places just stack them up with a FREE sign

I can see people tripping over those wood pavers though, unless the top of the wood is flush with the grassroot.

How about the dance floor rentals? Maybe you can get an affordable cover up from them.

They're expensive to rent -- one blog said at least $700. If that's in the budget, that would be the easier thing to do. If anyone is relatively handy, here's a blog that will show you how to make one with plywood and 2 X 3s. You could probably save yourself some time by painting it a single color, but this woman did a good job, and for the size she needed, she said it ran her about $300 at Home Depot.

Other than that...maybe a huge, cheap carpet remnant (if the ground is level). Be careful of interlocking anything. My daughter went to a tented reception with interlocking tiles used for the dance floor and they all started separating.

What about doing an aisle runner for the ceremony (if the ceremony is in the same space) and changing into a shorter dress for the reception? Just a thought.

Thanks guys! I've already got a dance floor settled. I'm just needing something for the rest of it. The ceremony isn't in the same spot either. The pallet idea looks neat but I'd also be worried of a tripping hazard and maybe getting heels stuck in the cracks. I guess I'd be willing to spring for synthetic grass but I was hoping to avoid it! I don't want it to look tacky.
