Alternatives to carving initials in a tree

I realize it may be overused, but FH and I have been drawn to an "initials carved in a tree" theme. It's on our invites, cake topper, and guest book.

We are having a backyard wedding (our own yard), and we have a huge oak tree (as in, 100ft or higher) smack in the middle of the backyard. Because of said tree, we're having to get creative with multiple tents which will be positioned on either side of the tree.

I was thinking it would be nice to recreate the heart and initials on that tree since it will essentially be a focal point, but I obviously don't want to harm the tree by actually carving it. I thought about painting it, but can anyone suggest any other creative ways to do this?

Carving the oak tree will not harm it. However chemicals and paint will be harmful

Could you attach a wood slice to it? I realize that might be just as permanent as carving into the tree, but if you used wooden dowels to attach it, it would at least be natural and has the potential to biodegrade. Or you could use glue or something on the slice and carve your initials and remove the slice? My other suggestion is if there are branches low enough, you could hang the wood slice from a branch and have your initials carved on it. If you go the wood slice route, you can save it for your home! We have a wood slice with our name and year of marriage burned onto it and I love it

I think I'd get to searching on Etsy, if I were you. I'm sure you can find a cute customized thing that looks like intials carved in a tree, something that you can hang from or set on an easel near your tree. A heart with your initials burned into it, a welcome poster, something.

Or, your unity ceremony could be a branding ceremony, and you could burn your initials into a piece of wood (I wouldn't do the actual tree, though honestly, that probably wouldn't hurt the tree too much).
