Alternatives to dancing

Katie, on October 21, 2020 at 7:56 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 23
I live in upstate new york and dancing is not allowed at weddings. So I want to find some fun safe activities to fill in the time people would be dancing, that way people aren't sitting around board. I bought some lawn games, I got ladder ball, Kan jam, and corn hole. Can you please give me some ideas and suggestions on what else I could do to make the reception fun and fill in the time people would normally be dancing?

My wedding is in August, and people say that I still have time and things could change. Problem is people have been saying this since covid first started and it seems as if very little has changed. I don't plan on the dancing rules to change before my wedding.

We didn't have dancing at our reception and it was fine, people were mingling and having a great time. However, noting that your wedding is 10 months away, I wouldn't worry about no dancing quite yet.

Our wedding was pre-Covid and we did a trivia game at our wedding. It was focused on us as a couple. It was a lot of fun.

You should get a photo booth! We found a cool, white inflatable one for relatively cheap on Groupon (under $350 total including someone to work the booth, prints, and a customized photo slip). We were allowed to have dancing at our wedding, but guests would take breaks to go to the photo booth and really seemed to enjoy it! You could also do a game that includes your guests like the shoe game. Between the games, mingling, and a photobooth, guests should have enough to keep them occupied.

Thank you I'll have to look at Groupon for photo booths. I definitely want to keep them occupied. Our wedding is supposed to be till 11 and I feel if we are just mingling people will eventually get bored and leave early. So I definitely want things for the guests to do so they are having a great time.

The reason why I'm worried about it 10 months out is because I know how the new york state governor is. He still has us in a state of emergency and is starting to close towns down again. I definitely don't see him allowing dancing for a long long time. I definitely think in 10 months it will still be the same or worse when it comes to the rules.

I do also think a photobooth kills time and is a fun activity people do. another thing is hiring entertainment? my wedding was pre covid and i really wanted a magician but in the end i didn't get one because i spent the money on a DOC instead. but i imagine something like a magician would be helpful in entertaining the guests

I don’t think dancing needs to be replaced. Typically, everyone doesn’t dance at weddings anyway. People enjoy simply mingling at receptions. The three games you listed seem like more than enough. Also, are you suggesting casual attire for your guests so that they’re ready to play?

How funny! Although we’re having dancing at our reception, we hired a popular “street magician“/ illusionist for cocktail hour. He will mingle amongst our guests doing his tricks. We purposely chose to get married in Vegas to have fun with it. So I couldn’t resist hiring a magician.

Yes it's a casual wedding and attire. We are having BBQ and lawn games. And didn't want people dressing up nice for the wedding.

I was thinking of hiring a magican/illusionist, but then was afraid of my wedding looking more like a birthday party. I'll have to look into a magican maybe they will have a video of them at a wedding or something. So I can see how it looks.

I'm getting married in upstate ny also but my wedding is April 23rd. I'm having my fingers crossed that we will be able to have dancing by April but I'm also looking into some ideas just in case. It doesn't look like Cuomo is going to give us the okay anytime soon I agree.

It’s one of the reasons why FH and I are doing the majority of our photos ahead of time, so that we can join in on 30-40 minutes of cocktail hour. I want to experience everything that we’re paying for. We also don’t have a bridal party, so we don’t have to worry about additional photos after the ceremony and can join cocktail hour shortly after it begins.

Guests love to chat if you give them the chance and don't need or want entertainment beyond that if there's no dancing.

I know a lot of people like me who if there's nothing fun to do then we leave early. If all there is to do is sit around and chat Im leaving after cake. I've never stayed long at weddings when there really is nothing to do. And so I want to make sure my guests have options to do fun things. I don't want people leaving early because they are bored. Plus for people who don't really know many people besides their plus one I think it's better to have options for them to have fun.
