Alternatives to flowers?

katiekies, on February 20, 2022 at 12:42 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 14

One of the first things I told my fiancé when we got together was "never buy me flowers" - I don't hate flowers, but I believe they should stay in nature, and I just don't want them to die. So I've never wanted flowers for my wedding ...

I fear my FMIL will have some strong opinions about that, but that's not the issue of the day. (We haven't announced our engagement yet, nor have we discussed major details, so I'll cross that bridge later.)

I'm wondering about alternatives to flowers (besides just using fake flowers) - What are some unique bridal bouquet and centerpiece ideas, sans flowers?

(Extra question: Would it be weird if the MOH/bridesmaids and I DIDN'T carry anything at all?)

Would live plants be ok? If you have any interest or anyone you know does to spruce up a garden or have some indoor plants, you could buy plants in pots that are living and happy and use them as centerpieces. I also love love love floating candles in glass vases with water. You can look them up on pinterest! Or even fruit inside glass vases. Really depends on your vibe. 😊

We had potted tuberous begonias as our centerpieces - I think they were beautiful and at the end of the night we donated them to a local nursing facility (through our photographer, who was a rockstar).

As far as bouquet alternatives, you could do Sola wood, or brooches, or paper (though I hate it when people tear up books to make their flowers).

I second the floating candles idea! You could also do potted plants and even potted peppers if you want extra pops of color. A wooden or fabric bouquet could be cool because you could keep it forever.

Books or board games can make cool centrepieces too, instead of flowers!

I think any of these things could be carried instead of flowers - they'd look so fun!

The main reason I don't want flowers is because I don't want anything that's going to die afterwards ... I don't have a green thumb, I fear plants would die quickly around me, lol.

The floating candles idea is new, it sounds interesting! ... I'm not a candle person either though, scared of fire Smiley ups I could probably work with candles with batteries (and obviously not put them in water).

Ooh, yeah, I've seen fruit in vases for centerpieces! Forgot about that.

I like the idea of donating the centerpieces, that's really nice! My fiancé used to volunteer at a nursing home, before the pandemic hit - he was there for two years. I'll keep this idea in mind, and maybe rethink my stance on flowers/plants.

These suggestions are brilliant!!! Smiley love

I haven't discussed major wedding details yet with fiancé, but I would love to have our theme be Fun & Games - our main mutual love/interest is board games. How did it not even cross my mind to have board games as centerpieces???

Thank you for the link! I think I actually took a look at this one, but forgot until some of the pictures looked familiar. The cloches seem like a cool idea.

You're so welcome! And, you could find the games at thrift stores etc, because you'd really only need the boxes, so it wouldn't matter if there were pieces missing or anything!

Random thought quite a few days after you post this. 😂 If it’s just a mental block of “flowers dying,” then maybe knowing that cutting the flowers is a good thing will help? Most flowers that are used in bouquets need to be cut off the plant to encourage the plant to produce even more blooms. It’s similar to how picking tomatoes will encourage the tomato plant to produce more tomatoes. That’s a very simple way of explaining it and you can read more into it if you want.
