Alternatives to the Photo Booth - what else is out there?

Jackie, on June 22, 2011 at 12:30 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 29

It seems like nowadays, EVERYONE has a photo booth at their wedding- it is almost an expectation of guests, yet every bride & groom are trying to be unique by having it! I can't do a photo booth because other friends are doing it at their wedding and want it to be 'different and original'... but what else is there to do? What other things are being done at weddings to create a fun and interactive feature or favor aside from the photo booth?

You can do a fun backdrop for them to take picture along.

kinda a photo booth with a kick

You can have your parents and grandparents picture hanging on the wall. and people can stand behind it to be inside the frames. If you put a couch in front of it you can get big groups, some on the couch and some behind.

A photo scavenger hunt - I SPY.... have a photoshare site created so that they can upload their pictures when they get home. Leave business cards on the tables for your guests (vistaprint does free ones, just pay s&h)

or have a laptop set up at the wedding and someone at it to upload your guests photos.

I am doing this type of set up against a white wall in my reception hall. I have a friend's teenager taking the pictures. There will be cards there for him to give everyone with the shutterfly site where the pictures will be so they can download their picture. It will also encourage them to upload their own pictures to the site.

Polaroid or Fuji instant camera + photo corners to stick the pictures immediately into your guest book and sign by them. You'd need lots of film on hand, but it would be essentially the same thing without the booth.

@Hayley - LOVE that idea!! Along with that you could get disposable cameras as favors so each guest has a chance to participate - they can't upload them (unless they scan them) but it would still be fun!

Edit: Actually I think if you get the disposables developed at wal-mart you can get a cd made.

Takara...I made an account on walgreens.com

I made cards on vistaprint that say, "Let us see our wedding through your eyes. If you took photos tonight, please upload them to walgreens so that we may see & print them to add to our photo album".

I just used the email address we've been using for the wedding as the username, and our wedding date as the password.

You can also use shutterfly, but walgreens printing is a lot cheaper.

Can you catch us when we kiss.

Find moments the photographer may have missed.

Use your camera and look around,

Please upload your photos, they are so hard to hunt down.

Some blogged how they made their wall

..the photobooth was built out of 2 pieces of 4'x8' board. If you look carefully, you will see a line in the middle of the wall where the two pieces are joined together by hinges. This allowed us to fold the entire frame in half for easy transportation. However, we couldn't really fold it completely in half because in the back, my husband screwed in 2x4's to use as a bracket support. He used a bolt system to bolt in the "angled" part of the bracket when we got on site. (cont)

We had to use two piece of fabric to create the illusion of drapes on each side because we didn't have enough wall paper to cover the entire wall. On the back, my husband screwed in a piece of 2x4 on each side of the back wall (up and down the wall at the edge on each side). He also attached another 2x4 at the bottom of the first 2x4 but allowed it to pivot (not stationary). So when we set up the wall, the 2nd 2x4 created an "L" shape and laid flat on the floor. A third piece of 2x4 was used to provide the brace and support for the "L".

I guess it could also sit on top of a long rectangular table... that way the table has the props and the people can just stand behind the table.

You can frame your parents and grandparents wedding pictures around it. Go to the salvation army store to get some big old frames, or painting that you can take the painting out of, and use the frame.

Set up your camera: Here’s where you have several options – ranging from super simple to more involved. One easy way to take the pictures is to assign a friend/guest as your photo booth photographer. Some guests would relish this assignment – you just need to figure out who they are (maybe a niece or cousin who might be without a date?). Another option is to pay a friend of a friend an appropriate, but budget friendly amount (say $50?) to take on this role. Have your designated photographer use a point and click digital camera to take the photos during the reception. Close down the “booth” the last 45 minutes of the reception so that he/she can print them off on a digital printer (make sure to provide extra ink cartridges for printing). Want to make it even easier? How about breaking out the instant camera? Fuji film currently sells a similar product – the Instax camera – that prints instantaneously.

If you have more time and energy to devote to the photo booth project, you can achieve a more “professional” result by checking out software programs that allow you to use your webcam to take and load pictures right on your laptop. The photos can be automatically shared on Facebook, Twitter and photo finishing sites such as Snapfish. Another bonus of these programs is that they run automatically, leaving your guests unattended (and uninhibited) for more candid photos. Visit the website sevenEightcline for one such software program and helpful hints on setting up your photo booth. for mac users

I know that someone on WW is having a caricaturist come to do drawings of the guests. I loved the idea so much that I researched it and may possibly do it as well.

They also have video-booths that guests can use. You get a DVD or USB stick of all the guests greetings and whatever else they want to do on camera.
