Am i being too picky with the wedding photography?

A, on May 22, 2018 at 11:08 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

Hi ladies! So I had finally started to relax about the wedding bc most things are booked...when something happened. We booked our photographer sometime last month and took engagement photos this past week. I am really struggling to enjoy them. I loved the photographer and the talent for the photos is there, the issue is the image quality and resolution. The photographer uses a DSLR but uses kit lenses which is what I'm guessing is the issue? The problem is that the photos are not as sharp as I would like and once you zoom in you don't see that clarity that I am used to in other photoshoots. I am kind of freaking out about this for the wedding because I really wanted pictures that I would love, as any other bride would and this lack of clarity in the pictures is messing with me. At this point I am unsure what to do, as we will struggle to find someone else in sufficient time with a limited budget. Please give insight if I'm being crazy and the quality is fine...

No, you are not being too picky. You want to love your photos and sharp pictures are must. I would get a new one for the wedding

I dont think you're being too picky at all. I could definitely see what your saying when I clicked on the other pic. I would talk to her and try to explain what the issue is. Maybe shes able to fix it. When you checked her out before hiring her did you see the same issue in her other pics? If shes unable to fix the problem then I would look elsewhere. It's not worth spending the money if you aren't going to love the pics.

I also see what you’re upset about. To me, the pictures are one of the most important aspects of the wedding- because they last forever! So I would suggest going with someone who has lots of experience, good quality, good reviews, etc. Spend the extra dough on the photography, it will be worth it!

Oh wow it is really blurry even without zooming in. And the one you posed above just doesnt say engagement photos i feel like the pose is off.. 🤔 I would definitely voice your issues to her, in a polite way of course. I hope she will redo them for you guys!

Did you look at her portfolio before booking? Did you notice this problem in other wedding photos of hers? I don't think you're being too picky, of course you want pictures that you'll love and you are paying for high quality. But if you didn't notice this in other pictures, maybe this is just a one off scenario or she was trying out a new lens or something? Either way, I would ask her about it.

Have you tried talking to her about it? It may be something as simple as changing something in the editing.

This is an interesting angle to take a professional picture at as well....you don't want pictures of the back of your head!

I'd reach out to her and voice your concerns.

It looks like a combination of heavy editing and inexperience on their part. The blurriness could be camera shake or not using the proper settings. These are the most important photos you'll have. Be as picky as you need to be.

Oh wow no the quality looks really weird to me, and the editing looks really unnatural. I would talk to her about it and definitely consider finding someone else

I would also check with them about the image size and resolution. Were you supposed to get the images as high quality large size? Our photographer gave us access to large size (like 5MB each pics) and social media sharing size at a much smaller size that if you zoom in get a little blurry where the large pics do not.

I do agree the editing on that linked picture looks a little odd though...

She seem to be trying to compensate the lighting with editing and it did not work so well. Also, seem to be an overcast day which is usually what you want for photos - trust me, clouds are photographer's best friends.

I would search through her portfolio a little more and speak about it. Any professional should not feel offended by customer's concerns.

If you don't reach a good decision get a new photographer.

    Where are you located>?

I reached out to her a few days back about the blur and she told me that there is no blur if I try to print out the pictures in a large size and that I may be noticing the blurs that are supposed to be there (such as a background) - lol.

I did notice some weirdness before booking with her but she was cheap and some pictures looked clearer than others so I kind of assumed they came out like that because of the website/FB and not the quality.

On the day of the engagement she did not have a tripod, I don't know if that plays into it. She is sending me the unedited pictures this week because my suspicion is that there is very heavy editing. I mean when you zoom into our faces you can see that some sort of blurring tool was used...especially on my fiance's face because you can tell the difference between blurred skin and his beard stubs.

We booked her for the entire wedding and she sent a contract but we didn't really sign it, she just has a deposit at this point.

Yeah I totally see what you’re saying. The pictures look... weird. Like almost fake if that makes sense? The editing and quality is definitely off. She shouldn’t need a tripod to take photos. My photographer did our entire engagement shoot without a tripod and our photos came out beautifully.
I’m not sure if the lenses you mentioned are the issue, or if she just didn’t take good photos and tried to edit them to make them look better, but I would definitely not want my wedding photos to look like these! I would talk to her about it. Maybe you can show her examples of wedding photos that you like from other photographers, and if she can’t do any better than that I would look for another photographer.
Do her reviews mention anyone having issues? What does her website look like? Are the photos good or the same as the ones from your e-shoot? I scoured the reviews for all the photographers I reached out to and the one we hired, I asked her for entire galleries of weddings they had shot previously and she gladly showed us. If you didn’t sign a contract, I would try to find someone else for your photography. Good luck!

Whatever you do i would not sign. This is no mistaking the background for your fiances eye. I can see that it looks off without zooming in. Sometimes people get lucky and find amazing deals on things and it all works out but for the most part we get what we pay for. So sorry you are dealing with this

I don't know how much you put down, but I would not sign the contract. Also, photographer rarely send out photos before editing, all of your comments show she is not a pro and you might regret the good price tag once you see the results of your wedding photos.

Thanks everyone. These are the final edited pictures. We put $200 down but are going to let her keep it and I’m hoping there is no issue with cancelling for the wedding since we never signed the contract like I said, there was no place for signature on it.

I have to admit I originally noticed the blur on the pictures online and had a gut feeling not to go with her but unfortunately I thought my pictures would turn out fine. It really sucks because she did a great job with poses and all but I can’t compromise on the quality.

Personally, I am not a fan of her editing style especially on the linked photo because it doesn't seem natural and seems too edited and more like a painting and honestly, like inexperienced (sorry). I think you should be too picky because wedding is once in a lifetime and you can't really retake them Smiley smile

If you can find another photographer, I would recommend you do - maybe look on weddingwire more or yelp? Also, if you are not fan of your engagement photos, maybe your next photographer can retake them for you as a lot of photographers include engagement session in their wedding package.

I know this is an old post, but as someone who has a degree in photography I can honestly tell you- this person was not a professional photographer. The poses and lighting are not close to professional, and she shot everything out of focus. This is bad bad BAD embarrassingly bad photography that looks like a friend with zero photography knowledge took it with a disposable camera.
