Amazon registry is dead

Ashley589, on May 8, 2016 at 10:15 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 52

Before you say my wedding is a few months away.....

I have already had one shower and have another this weekend. We are registered at Amazon and Bed Bath and Beyond.

The BB&B registry has been blowing up and is probably already 40% purchased!!! But only one thing has been bought from my Amazon registry.

Most of my favorite registry items are on my Amazon registry but I'm concerned that people won't buy them.

Have you had this experience with your Amazon registry? Is there something about it that makes people not want to use it? Am I doing something wrong?

We have a website where both registries are listed.

You should be happy that people are buying you anything at all...

A-lynn...not my point whatsoever. I am very happy to be receiving gifts.

My question is, is there a reason that people don't like to use Amazon registries.

I also have Amazon (my showers are not until July and August). But what I'm hearing is people like to go in a store an walk out with the gift that they can wrap.

People are buying you gifts, but not the right ones? Wow.

For showers most people prefer in store because you are supposed to bring the gift with you.

Just get over it and be thankful instead of acting spoiled.

I think it's a generational thing. It depends on your crowd. My brother would happily order something from amazon and have it delivered and wrap it as a gift... or more likely just ship it to you and be done.

    My mother would never.

Okay, I didn't realize I wasn't allowed to talk about registries without being accused of being spoiled.

I am very thankful for any gift that is bought for me, no matter what registry it is off or if it is on my registry at all.

I am simply curious if there was a reason that a BB&B registry would be that much more popular than an Amazon registry.

I think it's that people don't think Amazon at first. It's not the first thought of for wedding presents. If someone was registered there and BBB, I'd got to BBB first (habit).

I registered at two places - BBB and Sur La Table. Only two people bought something from Sur La Table, the rest were from BBB. After my wedding, I ended up buying the other stuff from Sur La Table I wanted, using the wedding discount.

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do.

What is wrong with people? You clearly are just asking if there is something not user friendly about the Amazon registry and if anyone has any experience.

I have a feeling it's just what PP said, that some folks like shopping at a physical store.

My friends had a single registry and had the same thing happen... I did notice that with some registries, you have to MANUALLY return to the registry page to indicate you've bought something, and people may not be doing that so it appears nothing is purchased. But it's also possible they prefer to buy in store, As others have noted, because they want to wrap it and bring in person.

However, it doesn't really matter because presumably you need everything on the registry. If you're disappointed because you really, really want certain things on Amazon, you just have to buy then with any money gifts you get later.

It's just the way you said it. "Most of my favorite registry items are on my Amazon registry but I'm concerned that people won't buy them." That's where we take what you said the wrong way. It's not right to be "concerned" that they won't buy you the gifts you want most. If this is the case, you should have only registered on Amazon.

I think we all know what she means, though. Most of my favorite things were on my Sur La Table registry, and I ended up buying them. No biggie, though.

I prefer to shop in-store. I'm not much of an online shopper at all, and maybe this is how the majority of your guests feel. I don't think you sound spoiled, though. You have some favorites that you were hoping to get- doesn't that apply to anyone who makes a gift list? Hopefully people will start using your Amazon registry. If not, then there is nothing you can do, unfortunately.

No problem. Gifts tend to be a touchy subject around here. Just gotta watch what ya say I guess!

A greater percentage of my Amazon registry was bought out, but I got more gifts from bed bath and beyond. It's generational. Almost all of my friends and my sisters have Amazon prime and buy almost everything from Amazon, and they used my Amazon registry. My older relatives and friends who didn't attend my shower but wanted to send a gift anyway used my BBB and Macy's registry. My Amazon registry was much smaller than my registries at other stores. A lot of the gifts on our Amazon registry were a higher priority for us too, but we didn't register for anything that we weren't willing to buy for ourselves. We plan to shop off of our registries after the wedding.

Also I didn't take your comment as spoiled. I took it as a 'is there a better way to do this'

    Wow people calm down.

I personally would love an Amazon registry because I have Prime and order all the time from there. However - perhaps your guests prefer in store.

I have two registries as well and so far the BBB one is being purchased from and the Target one isn't getting much love. I am not sure why but my shower isn't for a month so there is still time.

I think OP is more concerned that people aren't using the Amazon registry. People can have the gifts from Amazon shipped to their own homes to wrap themselves and bring with them to the shower, so this shouldn't be the issue. I personally love buying off Amazon registries for this reason- saves me time going to a store, getting the stupid thing printed off, searching through the store for the item. Ugh- so much hassle. But, I think it's an "old-fashioned" approach to shower gifting- what is the age demographic of your shower guests? If it's mostly older family members, that may be the problem.

Probably because it's online and if they don't have Amazon prime they have to pay shipping... If they go to a store it's free. Or lots of stores have free shipping over a certain amount

My MOH registered on Amazon for her baby shower and I remember there being an extra step in marking a gift as "purchased" (you needed to receive a confirmation email and then go back in to mark it off - something along those lines). It was kind of annoying hah...but that could be a reason why?
