Amusement park wedding

Julie, on August 20, 2009 at 1:34 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 18

My fiance and I really want to have our wedding in an amusement park, and, if possible, to have the ceremony performed on a roller coaster.

We live in Baltimore and do not want our friends and family to have to travel too far (negotiable). Hershey Park does not host weddings and we are on a budget, so we cannot afford to have it at Disney World.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I don't have any ideas for you as far as location, but when you say "on a roller coaster" do you mean like actually riding it? How will that work for older guests or guests who can't ride (pregnant, heart condition, too small, too big)? And some people are terrified of roller coasters. I'm sure you've already taken it into consideration, but just wanted to throw that out there!

Wowjunkie raises a good point, you could probably do your vows (you, your FH, and the officiant) on a coaster, but it might work better if everyone else were on the ground. Or you could do the vows at the base of the coaster, and the two of you go for a ride on the coaster while everyone watches. As for a venue, I looove Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA! It's about 3 hours from Baltimore.

Hi and congratulations. I was thinking maybe you have a family or friend who be willing to let you use their backyard for a nice ceremony and reception, a nice garden wedding wouldbe nice affordable. Maybe a nice potluck dinner or even a BBQ with family and friends would be nice. Afterall it's your wedding. Enjoy it

I'm right down the road from you, literally. Will be going to Hershey Park in a couple weeks. Smiley smile

How about Knoebels? They are VERY Family orientated, and they have all the picnic pavilions where you could hold the reception. Still within the three hour range, it is about an hour and a half from Harrisburg. Lots of camping in the area as well, if that is what people are into.

It looks like there is a six flags in Baltimore... That would be easy, ask them if they can do it.

Remember you need to take into consideration that guests will most likely have to pay to get in, and some might not do the rides, they would also be dishing out cash for food/drink concessions, just a thought but I think the idea is great!

    Thanks everyone!

wowjunkie- yep, we thought of that. We were thinking that we could be in the front car of the coaster, the officiant or priest could be in the car behind us and the rest of the wedding party could ride in couples in the remaining cars. The rest of the guests could watch from the ground as (if I can actually get someone to do this) the officiant will say the (abbreviated version of the) rites as we're going up the hill, then we'll yell "I do!" as we go down the hill.

Yes, our parents do not do rides, which is why I had really hoped to have it at Hershey Park. We figured that after the ceremony, our younger friends and family could spend the day riding rides and we could send our parents to Hotel Hershey for spa treatment. Oh well.

I'm waiting for a response from Six Flags and I will definately check out Knoebels! Thanks for the suggestions!

I know this idea is totally over the top, so I'm prepared to compromise for budget and comfort. Thanks again!

Oh, and we are going to Busch Gardens in september so we are going to talk to someone there about possibilities. That's a great idea too! Any more suggestions are more than welcome. Smiley smile

Oh, and we were going to keep it small, but pay for everyone's admission to the park and of course dinner afterwards.

Knoebels is actually free to get in, and you can pay by the ride or all inclusive (which is very reasonable compared to Hershey Park - over $50 full price now). So if there are people attending that aren't amusement park affectionados you/they don't have to pay to enter the park. I'm not sure if you can use outside catering, they do have on site catering, but you can certainly bring your own food there as well. We had a company picnic there a few years ago, their catering was decent, about the same as Hershey Park.

Just came to mind - of course since I do photography... You might get lucky enough to get them to allow your photographer in a ride attendant booth. Their insurance company might frown upon that though, I'm not sure how my insurance company would feel about me in that role?!

Or you could mic up, and get it on video, and have all the sounds recorded...

There is also Kings Dominion in VA. Not terribly far from Baltimore. I love Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, but Kings Dominion is much closer to us. (20 minutes away)

Knobels is a good idea cuz like the pp mentioned it's pay as you go and you can take your own food in the picnic areas.. unlike HP you can't take any kind of food or drink inside there... I see alot of parks mentioned but Dorney Park.. thats in the Allentown area I'd imagine it's within the 3 hr range.. They have a waterpark and coster park, but you also have the same probelm like HP, can't take food or drinks inside. GOOD LUCK and have fun

We are visiting Busch Gardens and Knoebels in september to do a little recon. We are not really beach people, but OC might be a good backup plan. Thanks!

Anyone have any suggestions as to what to do with my hair? It's long and curly and I think I'm going to have to accept that it's going to get totally messed up.

FWIW, OC is insanely expensive. I just took the kids there last week, and it is about as much for the junky rides there as it is for a day at an amusement park. Now I see why my parents never let me ride the rides when I was growing up!

I LOVE long curly hair! I say let it go wild, especially for rides. Smiley smile And I know you said you're on a budget, but I start at $1500 and would totally travel to do an amusement park wedding, so let me know if you need a photographer. Smiley smile
