Androgynous “buddy of honor” attire help

Mimimushrooms, on July 20, 2022 at 3:54 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
My best friend is happy to be my “friend-of-honor”! They identify as androgynous/non-binary so we’re still trying to come up with a good “official” title (open to ideas please).

We need some help on finding attire. For reference, my friend’s daily wardrobe consists of tailored suit jackets, slimcut trousers, and asymmetrical skirts. Their general fashion style is best described as “Asian boyband punk”.
They are ok with leaning fem for my wedding (so my older relatives don’t lose their minds and because my friend isn’t a big fan of full suits anyway). In our research, we both kept coming back to a specific Caroline Herrera dress (out of budget but good ref):Androgynous “buddy of honor” attire help 1
My friend likes this look because of:The tailored topThe dramatic skirt that isn’t “froofy”It evokes traditional Asian garb in a modern/fantastical way (no appropriation here, we’re both Asian)Formal but simple, elegant silhouette
As two cosplay nerds with decently advanced sewing knowledge, our current backup plan is to take a pattern from a favorite tailored shirt as bodice base. We have a ton of skirt patterns between us and our friends to research or we can probably draft one. However, this is very time/resource consuming so we’re hoping someone can point us in the direction of shops with similar styles but more affordable prices (the CH one is $4k…which is more $$$ than my dress). My friend likes blacks, blues, navys for color but we have room for reds and burgundies.

Here is a similar dress I found. It is about $600. Still pretty expensive, but not even close to the CH option!

I also found this dress. It has an asymmetrical skirt and has an Asian feel to it

This looks pretty! I don't see many sizes, but maybe Kay Unger would be a good brand.

That pants with skirt overlay provides an interesting option, especially in the solid blue. But your buddy probably favors the fitted coat over the ballgown or a-line skirt.

We’re open to the pants with overskirt. My friend is a bit worried about pulling it off since they’re “short and stumpy”. I forgot to mention it but another reason the CH one was liked was “higher waisted skirts/pants make my legs look less stumpy”. Thank you for the suggestions!

    "Person of honor"?

You could probably achieve that look with a maxi skirt and tailored top if they/ you aren't set on them wearing a dress. That might be easier to find in different colors and for a better price.
