Anxiety Issues (5 weeks to go!)

Jessica, on September 11, 2019 at 12:32 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 7

Hi everyone, yet another post about wedding planning anxiety here.

I'm about 5 weeks away from the big day on October 18 but I still feel like there's so much to take care of - all the decorations, waiting for RSVPs, the seating chart, squaring away things with rentals, florals, and the cake, not to mention my parents calling me up and suddenly reminding me of some traditions that I'm not sure I'll have room for.

Stress is one thing but I'm starting to experience physical symptoms that are really uncomfortable. For example, I spent most of my weekend doing wedding planning but my heart was pounding all day, and this morning too! What are some ways that I can cope? I'd love to talk to a therapist but realistically I don't think I'll get into an appointment until the wedding is over Smiley sad

I also just went on a low-carb diet as well as adjusted my birth control cycle (so I don't get my period on the wedding!) last week, so maybe that affects my condition.

Wow sounds like you have a lot going on. I would try to take some time each day to do yoga or meditate. Lots of deep breathing and if you can make some time maybe a nice massage. It’s hard when you have so much to deal with but think positive thoughts and breathe. Good luck. It will all be over soon.

I'm sure changing your BC isn't helping, since your hormones are changing. For me personally, the more organized I am, the more calm I am. The 3 months prior to our wedding, I bought one of those big desk calendars & planned almost every day (if I had wedding stuff to do). I made lists, delegated to my husband & my mom, and planned everything. I didn't feel overwhelmed since everything was planned out. I would also remember to take nights/days for yourself and not to wedding things, but do things that make you feel calm whether that's talking to a friend/family member/fiance, going on a date with your fiance, yoga, getting a massage, running, etc.

Heart pounding can definitely be caused by anxiety, but also diet. Try to see if your potassium or magnesium levels are off (for me, they usually are when my heart pounds). Also look at sugar intake. Just a tip. Since you also changed BC, go easy on yourself. Hormone changes are tough on the body!

For the anxiety, try and stay organized however you can. I make lists for everything, and stay very organized with my emails and google docs.

It may also help to prioritize needs vs wants. We wanted to add more favors/gifts for people, but we didn't have time or money to do so. Understanding your priorities can help ease guilt and anxiety when trying to make decisions, especially requests from family. Hope you get feeling better soon! Definitely try and see someone professional, even if it is after the wedding.

Interesting note about the minerals! I'll look into getting more vegetables with potassium into my diet. By sugar intake, do you mean that I should increase or decrease my sugar? I think I've cut out quite a lot since last week.

Good idea! I have a planner but I've been too lazy to take it out of my bag lately. I should break it open again. I sat this morning at work and started making a to-do list of the easiest and most urgent tasks, and after I was done, I felt a lot better.
It's really hard to stop doing wedding planning! I kept telling myself to stop and get ready for bed but I kept coming back to do one more thing.
I have a facial after work so I can look forward to that! I think I'll also pick up the apartment tonight too and try not to bother with wedding things - I've let the place go since I've been so focused but I'll probably feel better when my surroundings are more orderly too. Smiley smile

Personally (always check with your doctor), I find that too much sugar, not enough magnesium, and too much potassium cause heart racing (the potassium thing is very specific to me). Definitely see what works for you, and consider getting a multivitamin with magnesium in it if your doctor thinks it would help!

If you need a therapist ASAP try an online service like 7 cups or Better Help. I have the Better Help app. They match you to a therapist within a few days. The first therapist they matched me with wasn’t a good fit so I changed it and now I have one that’s really helping me.
On 7 cups you can even chat with a listener for free within 10 minutes (But listeners aren’t trained therapists so it can be really hit or miss).
I also like Teladoc if you want to ask a doctor is your pounding heart could be diet-related-I’m having stomach problems and I got to have a phone call with a doctor in like 20 minutes on a Sunday night.
I feel you on pre-wedding stress. Feel better! You can get through this!
