Any low carb ideas??

MrsCalderon, on April 29, 2017 at 1:52 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 32

So the doctor told my husband that he needs to go on a low carb diet to lose weight because of the meds he's on. Does anyone have any good recipes that are low carb?? Any low carb recipes that are not going to break the bank??

Thanks!!!!!

I have a million. I've been following keto for a while now. Pinterest will be your best friend. I have to eat keto because of a medicine I'm on too Smiley smile it takes some getting used to, but now it's pretty natural.

Also a lot of recipes may call for things like coconut flour, they get expensive. Keep it simple if you want to keep it inexpensive. You can do straight forward meals of meat and veggies, the expensive stuff comes when you are trying to make low carb breads and low carb cheat foods

I can agree with pp. it's hard to change those things, but I'd say a simple way is to cut the big carbs (rice, potatoes, bread). Brown rice is better than white. When you try to sub them out is when it gets expensive. Stick with protein and veggies.

My FMIL baked cauliflower with dabs of sour cream on it and I think some cheese for FFIL and it was pretty good as a side.

Love broccoli and cauliflower pizza, there are recipes online for both but I have found my favorite is a 50/50 mix of cauliflower and broccoli for the crust

I second using pinterst. I had a gastric bypass so that is how I cook, once you get into it, it is easy in my opinion. Good luck.

Pet peeve- low carb mean low on the bad carbs. Veggies are fruits are carbs!!!!!

Anyway check out Pinterest! And know that if you are following keto it will take your body 2-4 weeks to get used to using ketones as energy instead of glucose (ketones are a product of breaking down free fatty acids. FFA can't pass the blood brain barrier but ketones can). The first week he will experience the "keto flu" and will be moody but will be better after that! Good luck! Smiley smile

I love using zucchini noodles in place of pasta noodles. You really don't need any special recipes. Just take what you normally make and remove the carb or reduce the amount.

Spaghetti squash, lasagna using zucchini and eggplant, and I have mastered getting cauliflower to taste like mashed potatoes!

I'm a huge fan of Mason jar salads. I make up 5 on Sundays and so I have them for lunch all week. Tomatoes, ranch, eggs, avocado, bacon, lettuce, and any other veggie I'm feeling that week. Delicious, filling, and easy to grab!

Ival82 do you add the ranch when you're prepping, or wait til the day of?

MrsDSoonToBe - you can add the ranch when prepping. Put it in first then add the other ingredients layered with lettuce last

Some of my faves are smashed cauliflower, cauliflower rice, chicken breast covered w/ bacon and cheese, Parmesan breaded chicken fried in bacon grease, chicken topped with mozzarella cheese and italian sausage. Ground hamburger mixed with crumbled bacon and cheese. scrambled eggs topped with shredded chicken breast and cheese or sausage crumbles and cheese. You can even do quesadillas with low carb tortillas. If you want to keep it very simple just do a protein and vegetables. But while it is easy and inexpensive, it can get boring quickly.

If he wants a fast food option, try the grilled chicken nuggets from Chick-fil-A.

Only 3 grams of carbs in the 12-count. But don't let him have the superfood side cause even though it sounds healthy, there are 26 grams of carbs hiding in there.

Search for Keto recipes on pinterest, and join the "Low Carb and Losing It Original Group" on facebook - they post recipes, their successes, etc., and it's a great support system!

    Meat and veggies.

    I frequently google "easy paleo"

because- I'm lazy- and I want easy recipes- and paleo- because usually they are "low carb" and don't include heavy starches.

Pinterest, there are two or three really good paleo blogs too (Michelle's www.nomnompaleo).

I like the salad jar idea.

We eat a lot of scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, egg salad with microwave pork rind (look for microwaveable pork rinds on Amazon; a two pound bag costs about 30 bucks, but it makes a van load full or popped rinds, and they are completely different than the ones you buy at the gas station, lol...

I usually bake off a bunch of chicken legs and thighs on Monday so I have them all week, and boil a bunch of eggs. I just bought a bunch of coconut flour to try a pancake recipe.

It DOES get boring but I do much better without a lot of choices.

    Good luck!

I've been using cauliflower a lot in place of carbs. Mashed cauliflower and cauliflower rice are good. I've also seen recipes for cauliflower pizza crust and breadsticks, but haven't tried those yet.

I've also been using brown rice a lot more. I found a recipe on Pinterest for cilantro lime brown rice that's really good. FH complains that brown rice is "boring" but he raved about this recipe!
