So the doctor told my husband that he needs to go on a low carb diet to lose weight because of the meds he's on. Does anyone have any good recipes that are low carb?? Any low carb recipes that are not going to break the bank?? Thanks!!!!!

I'm on the keto diet. I love it..and you can definitely mess around to come up with fun recipes. I recommend you both watch YouTube videos by ketoconnect and check out their Facebook group as well (keto connection). They post lots of great recipes and the group members share recipes as well. Tacos in lettuce wraps are phenomenal (that's my dinner tonight).

Make sure if he's going very low carb he gets enough sodium (sodium is stored with the carbs held in your body with water, but you flush the water out when you're low carb so extra water and sodium is very important.

Some staple items I use daily are: avocado, spinach, avocado oil, pink Himalayan salt, coconut oil, eggs, bacon, pork rinds, cauliflower, heavy whipping cream, mushrooms, and unsweetened almond milk.

Also, steer clear of low fat and fat free anything. They usually have more carbs added in through additives.

Additionally, look up sugar alcohols and fiber to ensure your husband understands which carbs his body metabolizes and which don't. This is important in making sure he's not afraid of vegetables. Sugar alcohols are found in natural sweeteners such as erythitol (I use the brand Swerve). Some sugar alcohols spike your blood insulin levels and some don't, so you'll have to read up on which are best to use, but they should be subtracted from the fiber count. I buy an ice cream called Enlightened (sea salt caramel is my favorite) and it's low in carbs after subtracting fiber and sugar alcohols. Halo Top ice cream is also very keto/low carb friendly.

Eating out can be tricky, but fast food is usually pretty easy. Bunless burgers or bread free egg sandwiches are pretty easy to get anywhere. If he's in a pickle (Dill Kosher pickles are good btw lol) going through a drive through and ordering any sandwich, burger, or egg platter is easily made and nobody bats and eyelash.

I could go on forever as there's so much you need to know, but I hope I covered the most important basics.

Weight watchers has some great ways to lose weight and they have low carb options too. You can look on Pinterest for weight watchers recipes without having to buy the program. That's how I'm doing it right now.

If you have a grill, use it. There are so many meat/protein & veggie combos that you can cook on the grill and they don't feel like you're depriving yourself at all. Use seasoning blends (watch for sugar in those) and brush with butter or olive oil instead of sugary sauces/glazes.

Thanks Kate, be careful with the Atkins stuff though, some of the ingredients on there are sugar alcohols (Maltitol) that spike blood sugar levels. Some people don't react badly to it, but a lot do! I'm still learning too, I'm just about two months into this woe and all I do is research all day long lol.. Which is partially why I've been MIA on here.

Tons of recipes on Pinterest for reduced carb diets. The big thing is the new spiro slicer that creates noodles out of zucchini.

Think with Adkin's products is some have sugar alcohols in them which can slow the process of ketosis down.

Spaghetti Squash , you cut in half, clean out the seeds, brush on some olive oil and back in the oven for 20 min. Then you take a fork to it and it shreds. It looks a lot like spaghetti and tastes fine.

We use it as a pasta replacement.

Just a clarification- keto isn't a "diet" in the conventional sense of "I'm on a diet" it's more a diet like- how you eat- like my "diet is comprised of x, y and z" .

Spaghetti squash is delicious- and nommy. But it certainly isn't a replacement for pasta. I mean you can- but it's not really a replacement- it don'ts share any texture or taste similarities at all. As long as you are okay with that - you're fine.

But if you go in thinking you're eating fake pasta- you're going to be let down.
