View Quoted Comment My parents and a few aunts an uncles have nice barns not in use, never animal barns. Many a day or evening party, wedding, holiday, always for family or very close friends, not rental or commercial. But a few years ago, someone who grew up here with my parents and is MOB, called to say her daughter's venue not far away in VT, burned, and they could not find a place in a week, and half the people were flying in. She remembered parties at my mom and her brothers when young. My said no to a rental, but yes to a friend. She went on about remembering the barn was a jewel inside, years ago. Mom said, a cousin got married last weekend, and it is fine.
Her daughter and friends arrived with an SUV of stuff, they had stopped at a crafts store, and had bolts of colored burlap. And cartons of mason jars. When MOB arrived, we stopped holding it in and laughed. Below ground level, was seasonal apple storage, empty in spring. And the barn had alway been clean as a kitchen, for making jellies and candies, maple sugar products too. Every year since it was built or wood from the apple orchards, it was hand cleaned, and and waxed, and the walls, ramps doors as well as the floor, machine buffed to a hard glowing paste wax shine over the golden wood. For 60 plus years. And for the wedding the week before, we hung the railings of the spiral ramps, with decorative quilts, which are beautiful en masse. And after my mom called us, we had cut an armful or each of 3 flowering bushes, 2-4 foot cuttings, for them to choose which to bring to decorate, according to bride's choice. When they all looked as the barn door opened, sliding on electric,
truly, their mouths hung open. They did return all the burlap and jars. People from the city who summer in the country, or ski, nothing else, seem to think everything is ugly and old, and people are dumber than Hollywood . There is a different beauty to be found, if people look.
