any other miserable retail workers?

MrsN, on November 28, 2015 at 10:47 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 18

I am a manager at a home owned jewelry store, and it is now Christmas time in retail. I need a glass of wine... scratch that.. a bottle, and its only been 2 days since Thanksgiving.

Any other retailers out there??

I'm not in retail, but my MIL is. She's come home in tears during the holiday season more than once. I feel for you - this has to be the time of the year where retail workers probably lose their faith in humanity. You deserve that bottle of wine!

For the last 10 years I have been. I was laid off 6 weeks ago and decided to not stress until the new year. I would come in tears and be miserable for the holidays.

I worked retail in HS and the holidays weren't too bad. Busy, but, we weren't a major retailer (Claires!) so the holidays were busy but not stupid insane, so I didn't mind it. I don't miss retail.

    Me, me me...lol.

I'm only know working at my first retail job (almost 34 but worked call centers and day cares before). I work at Canadian Tire and I never knew how stupid and self entitled people are... and I've only been there since September. We had our red Thursday/black Friday 4 day sale... luckily tomorrow is last day but I'm expecting it to be busy as hell. Sundays are usually crazy and I think tomorrow will be worse. I worked 7-5 Thursday and Friday and had 300+ customers both days.

I work in retail...but this is my absolute favorite time of the year. Despite the teens with no work ethic and the employees who seem to think that the managers live at the store, I just have so much fun. Yeah, there are rude customers, but for the most part people are shopping for gifts and thinking about the people they care about, and it's a different kind of interaction that just doesn't happen that often other than these 6 weeks.

So maybe I'm weird. But I wouldn't change anything.

I'm an assistant store manager at a Virginia ABC store (liquor store, for you privatized state citizens). Our doors don't open until 10am, even though the staff is there getting everything prepped an hour before hand. Yesterday we had people pulling on our doors at 9:30am for our Black Friday sale (not even a good one). Usually when people are waiting outside, we'll be nice and open up 5 to 7 minutes early. Not half a friggin hour. I love my job. I get pretty much free reign from my manager to decorate the store as I please. I like to say it would be the perfect job if it wasn't for the customers. LOL! I kid, I kid. Seriously though, this is definitely the best retail job I've held, and retail is all the experience I have.

I worked retail at a big box store from age 16-21. I was in customer service for the last 3 years, the holidays were not a good time at all.

I don't work retail but I work for a 7-day a week thoroughbred racing publication. We work days, nights, weekends and holidays year round. It blows.

I worked retail for 8 years while i went to undergrad and grad school. Holidays and back-to-school season was pure madness. I definitely don't miss it at all.

During college, one of my jobs was working Lane Bryant for holidays and weekends. I hated the cleaning up afterwards because people were so freakin' messy and inconsiderate! Ugh.

I worked retail for 6 years and the only time I actually hated the holiday season was when I worked at Michaels. They are hands down the worst company I ever worked for and we were definitely their glitter covered work horses. They treated us like shit. I mean they treated us like shit year round but the holidays were the worst.

My mom manages a cracker barrel and they have been dealing with xmas since (I kid you not) JULY. She is so sick of xmas she is ready to scream. I have worked retail for 15 years and I am so glad to not be this year. It really does take away from enjoying the holidays and just life in general. I know it's a pipe dream but I just wish companies would scale back a bit in certain areas. IMO there's no reason for any regular retail store to be open on a holiday. Lets let black friday actually be on friday. Let's close stores on xmas eve while we're at it. People can get their shopping done earlier if they know it's coming. They can just be adults and go sooner. I honestly don't think it would even cost the stores any really because people still need to buy their gifts so they will just go the day before and then the store doesn't have to pay operating costs for that day. Plus, I think the goodwill it would do would help all around. I just hate how the holidays are more about stress than fun these days. That's why my family limits gifts pretty strictly and just spends time together instead.
