Any teachers out there?!

Ashley, on July 26, 2022 at 6:44 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 12
Are there any teachers out there getting married this fall/winter? If so, are you introducing your new last name at the beginning of this school year or waiting until after the wedding? I’m a 3rd grade teacher in Texas and I’m getting married in December. One of my best friends is getting married in September and she’s introducing herself as her future self. My coworkers and fiancé have all agreed I should start the new year with the last name that I will have in a few months so it’s an easy transition for my kiddos but in my indecisive fashion I’m torn on what to do. 😂

I’m not a teacher, but I would recommend changing it before. It gives the students time to get used to your new name for a few months and when they come back in the new year they’ll remember. But I’m sure if you decide to wait until after the new year or change it after your wedding you’ll still get students who will call you by your previous last name, especially with 3rd graders.

I am a teacher but I won't be changing it professionally until after the wedding. There are a few reasons, yes I know this is super silly and I m normally not superstitious but for me personally it feels like a jinx to be called Mrs______ before the wedding. Another reason is I don't want the school (or myself) dealing with the emails over the summer when class lists go out of parents thinking it's a new/different teacher then they requested/were expecting, because lord knows it happens hahaha. I have a co-worker who got married last November and she started the school year with her married name but she said it confused her and she found herself not answering to it haha. Do whatever feels right to you. Good luck!

Teacher here! I'd wait until after winter break/the wedding. With 3rd graders it could be confusing for them to be talking about Mrs. Future, when parents think their child is with Ms. past, even though they are both you! Also, it feels like a Jinx hahaha.

Even with my younger kiddos, I would talk about the wedding and all the fun and exciting things, including getting a new name. Then when it was finally time to be Mrs. Future, most of them were SO EXCITED to call me the new name! I also sent an email to parents just to let them know/remind them of the new name.

Some kids still called me by my old name, and I jokingly would say "huh? who's that?!" and they would all giggle and correct themselves. After 2-3 weeks they all were using my new name super easily.

Yeah I didn’t stop to think at all about the parents perspective and confusion that would result from that. I love the idea of hyping them up about the name change. I think I’ll wait until January to implement the name change. Thank you for your input! Good luck this year.

I got married in September 2020. I started the year with my maiden name as the name change process took a bit of time in my district and my students had already known me around campus under my maiden. I didn’t really make any kind of announcement or anything after the wedding. I changed my email signature and ClassDojo name and answered with my new last name if the kids asked, but it wasn’t until the following year that I made the big change by starting with my married name. I teach 4th grade, if that matters.

I got married last year in October. My maiden name and new name both started with "H" so I thought going by "Ms./Mrs. H" would be an easy transition, especially since my maiden name was German and kind of long.

Well my elementary students usually still just say "Ms. H", my keycard still said my maiden name, and it wasn't until the last day of school signing yearbooks where I signed my new last name that the students were like "your name is ______?!?!"

If I could do it again, I would start the year with my new name, lol. Saves a lot of confusion and going by multiple names throughout the school year

I'm not a teacher, but I would make the change after winter break. It definitely would be tougher for them in the middle of the semester, but since it's a December wedding, there's a good break/reset for them.
