Any Type 1 Diabetes Brides or Grooms out there?

Emily, on June 16, 2016 at 10:05 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 14

I've started to talk to my Endocrinologist about our wedding, just to get an idea of how I should prepare to manage my diabetes for that day and for cake tastings and dress shopping (I have an insulin pump, where am I going to put it?) and I wanted to know if any of you had any advice for how you are going about it all? Also, if I decide to not go off of my pump (There's the option to go back to shots for 72 hours), where should I put it? Should I get a pouch sewn into my dress or get a second garter?

I don't have diabetes but I saw on a say yes to the dress episode where they made a pocket for her pump. But I guess it depends on the type of dress, that probably wouldn't work for a fitted dress.

My friend had it on her thigh the day of her wedding .. Def keep needles as back up though! Her pump actually got loose after the ceremony but was able to fix in the limo lol but other than that she timed a nice bolus around dinner and cake lol ur also dancing and being active that I'm sure the spike won't be too high Smiley winking

Depends on what type of dress you're wearing! I'm sure you could figure out a way to attach the pump to yourself!

I just clipped mine to my underwear - I didn't wear a garter at all. My dress was tea length, so when I needed to bolus it was easy while I was sitting to unclip it, drop it from under my dress, bolus, and then I kind of wiggled it back up and clipped it. That's how I wear it with regular dresses as well.

I would never go back on shots; they are a pain in the ass and I find the lack of flexibility so annoying. I was so active dancing at my wedding that I didn't have to bolus as much as I expected I would, and I would hate to deal with shots and the way certain types of insulin peak at different points.

The lack of flexibility is what is holding me back on the shots. And I love my pump so much! But good point on the dancing! My worst fear, though, is to go low during the ceremony!

I may just clip mine to my bra. I don't feel comfortable having it lay any lower than the abdomen in fear that it'll fall and break. I'm worried about going too low that day, but I now have the continuous glucose monitor and it seems to be a BIG help!

I am having the same issue, I don't know if I should buy the strap for the leg, if I can get a little pocket made on the inside of the dress or just putting it in my bra that day.....

My fiancé has the pump and he just has to adjust his insulin intake obviously when eating or drinking sugary things. I suggested to him that whenever we go off for our "away moments" together, that he can check his levels during that time too. He also suggested keeping his testing kit under the head table and checking in a sneaky manner when he has to do it. I'd say stick to the pump because it'll be much more reliable, and if you can, try to alter your dress for it or attach it to your back under your dress, Brittany spears style!

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I'm going dress shopping soon, so hopefully I'll have a little better idea of where to put my pump after that Smiley smile

I was looking at one dress without pockets and spoke with the seamstress who had great ideas. Ultimately I selected a dress that conveniently had pockets, so it worked. I spoke to seamstresses at three stores, they had all encountered a bride with a pump before! The management shouldn't change for the day....carb count and check your glucose. Dancing may be considered to bring your blood sugar down, but alcohol will raise it, so everything will balance. Also a small spike in blood sugar on your wedding day will not have long term effects!

@Emily when you go dress shopping let them know about your insulin pump and see what they suggest also.

FH is type 1. I will have his test kit, syringes, Lantis, Humalog, and glucagon handy with ME like I usually do bc I barely trust anyone else to take care of him. On his bachelor weekend his twin brother will be in charge and knows the ropes, day of (wedding) he'll be fine managing it himself but I've told him countless times he cannot drink too much. Beer is fine bc he can pace himself and won't overdo it. Other than that he knows better than me when to take his shots before or after eating and he's pretty good at timing. Everyone's condition affects them differently and everyone manages differently. But I have threatened his groomsmen several times to not pressure him into drinking too much just bc he needs to celebrate "last few days/hours/minutes of being single"

My seamstress is sewing a pocket into the dress. It's a fit and flare so she'll be putting it kind of right below the hip where it starts to flare out. I wear a medtronic so the tubing is an issue for me. Omnipod would be so much easier with the handheld device to bolus.
