anybody DIY engagement pics?

megan, on December 13, 2014 at 11:14 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

We are going to attempt to "selfie" some pictures to use on our save the dates, and im wondering if anybody has ever done this before and how it turned out? We had planned on buying an engagement session with a local photographer but recently my fiance was laid off work and the cost no longer fits in our budget. Any advice from anybody?

Invest the $20 on a really good tripod. That way you can move around, set the timer, and go! My camera has a self timer with the option of having a 10 shot burst. Or just pinterest selfie engagement pictures. There's one where the couple took 9 shots with their hands in different positions and when they put the frames together their hands made a heart. I'm on my phone or I'd upload the pic for you Smiley sad

No, it's one of those things I wanted to leave up to the professionals.

@Alexis his dad gifted us a super nice digital camera that has a pop up flash and a timer, so we did already go out and buy a tripod and it only cost 8 bucks! I saw the one on pinterest with the 9 pictures too, its one of the few I screen shot and FH has an app on his old iphone that instructs you on how to take those photos so they match up haha. I didn't think to add "selfie" to my search though, thats maybe why I got so frustrated scrolling and only finding typical poses. We were supposed to go today but his dad called him needing help at work so even though hes working and thats good im a bit bummed that we cant go on my only day off this week

We did engagement pictures with our photographer as a trial. The pictures themselves weren't as important to us as the trial run before the wedding.

However we did some diy photos of our actual engagement. We got engaged on vacation and were visiting the Grand Canyon. We did almost a mini diy engagement shoot at the Grand Canyon with our tripod and remote. The pictures turned out pretty good but not pro quality. We used those pictures on our Christmas card last year as an engagement announcement. My recommendation would be make sure you have a tripod, remote and decent camera.

Get a tripod. and you can set up the timer. or get a remote for 8 dollars and set your camera settings for the remote. I do it to take self portraits. and they turn out great.

the remote would probably only work if you have a dslr

I would advise you against using the popup flash. The popup flash will likely give you redeye and harsh shadows on your faces. Take your pictures outside in the shade or on an overcast day.

Some point and shoot cameras work with a remote. Using a tripod is good advice as well.

ETA: This is just me being picky, but a "really good" tripod costs a lot more than $20. You don't need anything fancy for what you are doing though, so whatever tripod you have will work just fine as long as it is stable.

I think this is something you can diy it's better to leave it up to the professionals so you get the product that you wanted.

We had awesome engagement photos taken right after the actual proposal, but we've taken some of our own also… Paris Photos = pros, others = self taken

Maybe you have a close friend or relative that has some photography experience, even as a hobbyist, that could snap some photos for you for free? Taking pictures yourself isn't impossible, but it's definitely easier to have someone else do it.

As a photographer, dont use the the pop up flash, you dont really need it. shoot in manual. if you decide to do them yourself I can give you the settings you need but if you dont want to get technical shoot in auto (makes my skin crawl lol) but without the flash, or turn on the no flash setting. I would do them if you were in the area as I would love to get more experience and help you guys out.

I'd also do it for close to nothing. but I dont think you guys are in the area..

I would advise getting a friend thats into photography to do them, (they dont have to be a professional just someone who knows the ins and outs of their camera and such) that way you can tell them you want with out the hassle of getting up to move the camera every 5 seconds

So we went yesterday and made our first attempt and I must say, after coming home and photo shopping a little bit, we were SOOO so pleased with how the photos turned out. We live in ohio and since its winter the sun doesn't come out very often but yesterday it was a perfect mix of sunny and hazy. No harsh shadows but enough sun light to make it work. We only had a couple hours before the sun started to set, and we didn't realize the park we chose didn't have parking so I didn't bring a change of shoes, so we could have gotten more shots in if we had known all this but its all good. We want to go one more time with a little more planning and we figure if we dont get anything better than what we did already, we will just choose from the three or four we've deemed as favorites. How do you upload photos on here from mobile? I would love to share what we got and get some feed back. As for taking a friend with us, (this sounds totally lame) but we dont have any friends out here, and it definitely sucks. I asked a girl from work if she might want to help us but she was busy. But like I said it all turned out pretty spectacular, considering we hadn't thought of poses, we didn't know where we were really going, we used the self timer, and the tripod we bought is only like 8 inches tall and we forgot to bring a crate to elevate it...it could have gone much much worse haha. I so appreciate everybody's input! Seriously, how do I post a pic in this thread?

You sadly can't post pictures using your phone. You have to get on a desktop.

We did! We borrowed a nice camera and a friend, and found a pretty spot in the woods. I planned it for a day I was getting my hair cut already, and just asked them to curl it. I did my own makeup. They turned out so cute!!! The good camera was the key. I touched up a few, but for the most part, we loved them as is! Only cost a few bucks to print them out
