Anybody do Pre-Cana Premarital Classes?

Melanie, on March 20, 2016 at 10:14 AM Posted in Planning 0 19

I'm Catholic and just got this done a couple of weeks ago. It was 'okay' in my opinion.

Personally I think premarital counseling in any form is a great thing before the wedding.

Did any of you have to do this, any other Catholics out there? What did you think of it? I'm just kind of 'meh.' afterwards.

I did it last April, and it was terrible! The one couple running my session was the worst

Yeah I actually did it online. I found it to be somewhat archaic and not very 21st century.

I have finished the counselling but still need to attend the actual class in a few weeks.

The offer it online? We took a FOCCUS test first, which just highlights certain areas where we're supposedly more compatible than others. But I just can't imagine how well an online pre-Cana works. We took a long, one-day class with maybe 20 other couples, and I thought it was really helpful. A lot of the stuff, we had already discussed with each other in some way or another. But other subjects, we really hadn't delved into, and thought it was helpful. Plus, it was nice meeting all the other couples.

Oops, forgot to mention that I guess the couple we had who led the class were pretty cool - non-judgmental, offered lots of advice.

We did the FOCCUS and a LONG day of classes that was lead in sections by 4 different couples. Some of the information was interesting but they could have easily shortened it up. We had so many breaks when we didn't need them.

But.. Some info was interesting and even unbaptized FH thought so.

All we've done is the FOCCUS test. Still waiting to take the classes. I'm nervous and excited.

We did it a few weekends ago. It was two days long which sucked since it took up our whole weekend, but ultimately we got some good advice and communication out of it! Just ignore the "natural family planning" and not living together/sleeping together before the wedding part and it won't be so bad.

To my DH and I getting married thru the Catholic church was the absolute most important part of our wedding day, we didn't mind going thru the process to get there. We took the FOCCUS test, which was very interesting because it showed how compatible we were. We did not live together before we got married, it was a personal decision but it was worth it to us. We also met with our priest several times over a six month period and he really got to know us. Our ceremony was so personal because of it . Lastly we went to the engaged encounter weekend and it was pretty awesome, we learned new ways to communicate. And the two couples that ran it were really funny. I did notice a lot of couples who didn't seem to take full advantage of it and were on their phones a lot.

We did it a couple of months ago and thought it was awesome! At first we were dreading it because it was Saturday and Sunday but it turned out to be amazing. Different couples advising on different subjects. We thought we were going to be lectured and judged but it was far from that. We both left feeling closer to Jesus and each other. I guess it depends a lot on the couples leading it.

We didn't have to do counseling. We have met with a priest a few times, did the conference for engaged couples for a day which we actually didn't mind. And it was good to do the FOCUS. We met on CatholicMatch.com--they did a good job matching us according to the FOCUS we are 93% compatible. But the questions did make us discuss some things I think we may never have thought of before marriage.

We are not Catholics, but we did take a 6 week marriage counseling course (1 day a week) and really loved it.

I am doing mine in a few weeks. My brother and sister inlaw thought it was very fun where they went! I think it depends on who is leading the class. Hopefully it's informative and helpful for us. We are committing a whole day to it.

Ours wasn't called that, but, yes, we did premarital counseling! It really helped us get to know each other better, even though we were already living together! I would definitely recommend it! =)

It all depends on who's leading the class. Even though FH was dreading the idea of being stuck in a room that long without speaking, at the end he agreed that it was a good class. Thankfully we had covered all the points that were talked about but it was a nice reassurance for us to know that we're in the right path. Some of the couples were actually struggling to answer some of the questions.

As for NFP I actually liked it. I can't take birth control pills so, NFP isn't necessarily ridiculous to me.

Yeah you can do the whole thing online. We got paired up with a couple and went through 8 chapters of content. We took about 8 weeks to get through this, one, sometimes 2 chapters a week. Each chapter took at least 1.5 hr to get through, so it was extremely thorough. It included lots of videos, scripture translation. It was accepted by my Deacon and diocese so I did it no problem. I choose to not do birth control so yeah, NFP is actually a good thing they cover. However I live with FH so some other aspects I'm more lax on.

8 weeks?! Urgh no thanks, it was good for 2 days. I actually feel like I haven't had much interaction with the church with the wedding prep. I only met with our priest once during this process. But, I also know him pretty well since I used to be a youth leader.
