Anybody else run across this?

So I am renewing my drivers license tomorrow, Im already a couple weeks late due to wrestling with this. We are getting married in September and I am changing my last name to his but I hate the idea of having to pay for a 4 year license only to turn around and need a new one in less than 6 months. Any ideas on the best way to handle this? Thank you.

Hi Nichole! I think it’s best to change it to what your last name is now as September is still some time away. I am not sure if they require documentation of your last name, but I know here in Texas it doesn’t cost that much to change it and request a new one.

Not sure where you are, but in Texas I had to present our marriage license in order to change my name on my DL. It unfortunately may be unavoidable having to go in twice. I would check if your state allows you to submit your documentation for a name change all online to see if you can avoid having to go in physically twice.

Legally, you won't be allowed to change your name until after you're married. You'll want to start at the SSA, then do your DL, then all the other things. Check with your DMV - sometimes they allow you to have a change a no (or a smaller) charge if it's within a certain period of time (no guarantees though, and you definitely need to go ahead and go if you're already late).

Yea I know I cant change my name yet but its damn annoying that I have to jump through all the hoops and pay the money only to turn around and do it again in September.

Nothing quite like bureaucracy . . . lol

I would check to see what they do about the charges though. Sometimes the fees are waived or smaller since the renewal will have been so recent.

Frustrating as it is, unfortunately there is nothing you can do to get around it. Ask what the process is of changing your name at the DMV and if there are extra fees involved.
