Anybody regret not getting a day of coordinator?

soon2bemrs2017, on September 9, 2016 at 7:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

Trying to decide if I want one or not. I already have most of my vendors done so I know I don't need a full blown planner but was thinking maybe a day of coordinator would be helpful. In my DJ package he included a lot of the things that I feel like a coordinator would do so I don't know if the cost would even be worth it. Basically I need somebody to handle any last minute dilemmas that come up, light the candles in the venue before people come in, and take the chairs from the ceremony space to the reception space. What's everybody's experience with them or without them? Thanks!

My coordinator has been so helpful throughout the planning process...not just with vendor management but making sure other things I didn't think about were addressed. I don't want to have to handle things if they go (inevitably) awry so she was the best investment for my day imo.

I panicked the week before and got one! It would not have been the same without her. She was more of a friendor which I know is frowned upon here but she was great. My day was SO much less stressed. And hers was crazy, cause it's a wedding and things will go wrong. Probably the best decision I made during the whole process

I've never seen a DOC package that includes the moving of chairs. I'll be interested to see if anyone else has.

@Going to the chapel: Really? I thought that they did all the little tasks like that. I've never known anybody who had a day of coordinator though so I have no idea

They're main job appears to be working with the vendors and arranging decorations, if needed. Not moving furniture.

YES. I didn't have one, and that was a mistake. It didn't ruin my evening, but it would have been easier had I had one.

I planned my wedding minute for minute. I printed schedules out for everyone - preacher, photographer, caterer, DJ, etc... (And even an alternative schedule printed on the back just in case during the rehearsal we decided to flip the first dance with the dinner.) And even though everything was one hundred percent planned - I would have died without my DOC.

I HIGHLY recommend one. She did so much. She knew everything I wanted, had the itinerary, and put it all into effect. I felt so much better knowing that she had everything I wanted and put it all into play.

And yes - my DOC helped move some chairs. The venue mainly did it, but my DOC had no problem jumping right in there to help. She was a life saver.

My doc informed me that she will do "whatever is needed" day of. If she has to help with benches or whatever that part of it

We skipped it and I didn't notice.

Our wedding was on the smaller side though approx. ~75.

I highly recommend it. I'm a control freak and feel like I'm very organized, but on the day I didn't have to worry about any of the logistically things because my planner did it all.

I suggest you enlist the groomsmen and/ or wait staff to assist with moving chairs. I don't know how many guests you're going to have but I can't image one person trying to move 30 - 150 or however many chairs you're gonna have there.

They'll also manage gifts and cards, which is super important. I know a couple that had some of their cards stolen at their wedding. So shady.

Most DOCs will also assist a month out with the timeline, vendors etc. Mine has been so helpful and so worth it so far!!!

Will the venue set up for you? Or can you pay them to set up?

How large is your wedding? We did not have a DOC, but our wedding was only 20 people and we paid the rental company to set up chairs, tables and tent and we dropped off our decor at the restaurant the night before and they set it up for us before we arrived. For a larger party however, I think a DOC is probably the way to go and we only avoided it because we had a very small, simple wedding.

I did have a DOC, but I regret not having more meetings in advance and truly letting go of the logistics. I was still worried about details at my wedding, and that is my one regret! Ideally, you should be able to just let things go and enjoy your day. I'm pretty picky about certain things, so like some of the decorations were a bit off of what I had intended, and while I didn't get upset about it it would've been nicer if things had been exactly as I had thought! So I wish I had hired maybe a month-of-coordinator or something in order to spend more time drawing diagrams of exactly what I had in mind, etc.

Thanks everybody! The venue is volunteer ran. Basically you rent the place, and you're responsible for everything else so no set up or anything. It's in a forest preserve on a donated farm and apple orchard. I definitely wouldn't have one person moving all the chairs because we have over 100 people but I figured they would jump in and help whoever ends up doing that. Luckily I have 30 male cousins who wouldn't mind (I know, I know...bad etiquette lol)

My FBIL just got married and he had hired one. She seemed good in keeping the night organized. The only thing was we're Coptic Orthodox, so practically everyone working in the church only spoke Arabic and she was unable to actually communicate with them. FH stepped in and took care of everything church wise. So, language! Of course it depends on your needs, but just something to consider (I'm sure they hadn't aha and it's something that can easily be overlook).
