Anyone able to get a full refund for wedding canceled due to Covid?

Is anyone able to a full refund (including all deposits)? If so, what does your contract say and how were you able to get them to do that? Our wedding got postponed once already and now we just want to cancel but they won’t give us our full deposit back if we cancel. Our contract does have “act of god” language but it says in the event that happens, the contract may be terminated and deposit applied to a future event.

Most deposits aren’t refundable. The deposit was paid and became a place holder to block off a specific date. So once it was paid, that vendor had to decline other people who also wanted to book that date (thus turning away money because the vendor anticipated the remaining payment in the future from you). So you might get other payments returned, but typically not the deposit.

Oh wow! That sucks. I guess I’m extremely thankful for my vendors. They’ve all been super accommodating about our postponement. Our venue was the only contract that said their deposit was both non-refundable AND non-transferable. But they totally transferred it to our new date, due to the obvious circumstances. So are you moving forward with August?

Well, at this point we're going to have a more official elopement with like four people, none of them family. I told the dj he better be ready to play for all 4 people, and the catering better be on point if we're stuck going through with it. And I want those pics to be on point. Not sure when we're replanting, since most of the stuff we paid for isn't transferring to a 2021 date. Texas y'all.

That sucks they won’t even let you postpone. For us, the whole payment is divided into 3-4 payments. It’s not clear cut what is considered a deposit and what’s not. Our wedding was close to when things shut down so we almost paid everything in full already Smiley sad

I’m curious to know how this works as well. We already postponed once & our wedding is now Aug 23rd. Things aren’t looking so hot right now so we are considering canceling the big stuff as well. I’m sorry you’re having to go through this too!

Sorry you are going through this too! Agreed I’m just getting tired of postponing multiple times and we are just ready to move forward with our lives already. I don’t think things will be normal until we have a vaccine and most people are vaccinated.

We just met with our coordinator for our reception venue & caterer and they are willing to put our deposit towards a new date. She did state that if we would decide to cancel, the deposit would be non refundable which makes sense. In most cases with all vendors deposits are typically non refundable.

I’m not sure if there is wording in your contract for a force majeure clause (act of god). That would be very helpful but not commonly found. I’m in a similar situation where we signed the contract in 2018 with no clause and we had to postpone once already (May 22, 2020) with no option for a refund. Our postponed date is supposed to be October 16, 2020. Currently trying to figure out other ways to attempt to get the money back. I’ve started discussion with the venue and am waiting to hear back. I’ve seen examples where they’ve fought with something called the doctrine of impossibility which you can read about online. I’ve also read you could attempt to report the venue to the better business bureau and have them intervene, or seek legal counsel. I stand to lose about $7000 at this point so I’m more inclined to seek legal counsel if it comes to it. Hope some of that helps.
