Anyone DIY'd their card box? Where can I find a raw, locking wood box?

MrsVoegs17, on July 24, 2017 at 12:57 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 28

I am looking for a raw wood box that locks (or can be locked with a lock) to use for my card box that won't break the bank (thinking like $30 or less). I want to stain it on my own and add my own paint. I was going to do an open suitcase card box, but with all of the horror stories about people stealing cards.. I've nixed that idea.

I can't find any raw wood boxes that come with a locking clasp or have a loop to add my own lock. Has anyone else found something like this?

Just about any craft store would have a box like that. You can always buy the stuff to add the lock at any home improvement store.

Maybe try Hobby lobby, Wal-Mart or Amazon. Those are a few places to start off with then you can compare prices.

I'm having a hard time finding anything with a slot in it for the cards and I don't know how to cut one myself without messing up the box, lol.

I got a box from Hobby Lobby and stained it. I don't have my phone on me, otherwise I'd post a picture.

I actually got my card box at TJ max. It is just a simple wood box with a top, I'm thinking of adding hinges and cutting a hole in the top. It was only $8!

I saw one like that at Michael's recently! It was a little darker, but there was a slot and lock like that.

Have you tried tradesy, wedding-recycle, ebay, or a local wedding page on fb?

You could drill starter holes, 1/4" drill bit or so, then finish it with a jigsaw. Sandpaper the edges.

If you guys don't have the tools, you could always crowdsource it on Facebook or something. Somebody has saws they like to cut things with.

I bought mine from hobby lobby, they always have coupons online for 40% off one item, so it ended up being $16

Cardboard hat box. Doesn't lock though. For my Jenga guest book I bought a wooden box on amazon and clasp from the hardware store and just screwed it on.
