Anyone DIY'd their card box? Where can I find a raw, locking wood box?

I am looking for a raw wood box that locks (or can be locked with a lock) to use for my card box that won't break the bank (thinking like $30 or less). I want to stain it on my own and add my own paint. I was going to do an open suitcase card box, but with all of the horror stories about people...

I am looking for a raw wood box that locks (or can be locked with a lock) to use for my card box that won't break the bank (thinking like $30 or less). I want to stain it on my own and add my own paint. I was going to do an open suitcase card box, but with all of the horror stories about people stealing cards.. I've nixed that idea.

I can't find any raw wood boxes that come with a locking clasp or have a loop to add my own lock. Has anyone else found something like this?

Save yourself money, time and effort and get a cardboard box at the craft store.

I wanted to DIY mine too but I couldn't find a box to start with and didn't want to completely do it from scratch. I HATE hobby lobby (political reasons, i won't get started) but I was desperate and decided to look at their store online and found one on sale for $15. I had to buy a lock separately and the lock doesn't go in all the way so it doesn't dangle, it just sticks in there horizontally but whatever, at this point as long as it locks I don't care. My budget was also $30 max.

I made three card boxes - two for my two nieces, one for a friend of a friend :-) My avatar is the first one I made. The wedding colors were black, white, and green, with accents of pink. I used paper-mache boxes from Joannes (using coupon of course!) and scrapbook paper. I then used my cricut to cut out petals of flowers to cascade down the stacked "cake". There was a slot cut on top to place the cards, the box could not be opened unless the glued base was destroyed (it's terrible to think the cards and money would be stolen during the reception, but it has happened!) Make whatever you want uniquely yours!

We are making our own but we are actually using our mailbox haha. We bought our first house together and thought it would be sentimental to have our mailbox as the card box from our first home together. So now we have to buy a new mailbox to replace this one!
