Anyone else NOT doing uplighting?

It seems like uplighting has become a staple at weddings recently. I don't always love the way they look, but I've seen them done really nicely, too. Unfortunately for me FH absolutely HATES them and it was the one thing he had a really strong opinion on, so we're foregoing them all together....

Unfortunately for me FH absolutely HATES them and it was the one thing he had a really strong opinion on, so we're foregoing them all together. Instead we're going for a very candlelit look -- 10-14 candles on each table and the venue lights on, but dim.

Somehow I'm still afraid it's going to look bad and that we'll be "missing something" without the uplighting. Which is ridiculous. Stupid wedding industry is getting inside my head!

It's included in our venue rental cost so we're doing it. But I would have looked into it anyway. I like the look.

I wanted uplighting it just went with what I had pictured and was lucky my venue already had it. The way you described your venue it does not need it, I agree with your fiancé.

No it was just an expense I couldn't justify. We have a small budget so it just wasn't going to fit.

The problem isn't necessarily uplighting, the problem is uplighting by itself. Uplighting by itself doesn't look good. Tables will be dark, middle of the room will be dark, and it won't feel like a wedding.

Use the rule of threes, three types of lighting for your space. It can all be white, some can be colored, some can be patterns, monograms, etc, but use at least three different types of light sources.

Candles are great, low cost. Go with multiple heights on each table and throughout the venue. Always bring light to your guests tables.

You can go with "uplights" but instead of colors go with half of what is recommended and use white or amber for accent lighting. Then it's just warming up the room with ambient light which is flattering for photos.

Then do a cake spotlight. Then use the overhead lighting but dimmed. Then you have a really nice balanced look. Rent lighting and do it cheaper or get a company who can provide things other than just colored uplighting.

For the love of all things holy stay away from red and green DJ lasers, they will ruin all of your photos!

We were outside in the dark so we had uplighting to light up the palm trees. It doesn't sound like the space you're having it at needs it if it's fancy on it's own.

Not using it. Didn't want to pay the extra money and our venue doesn't really need it.

I really had no opinion on it, but our venue doesn't allow it.

@Superlative - Thank you for the design help! I didn't realize they made wireless uplights, too. One of those would be perfect for our cake table! :-)

We're not, I don't like it, and our venue really doesn't need it. What we love about our venue are all of the windows and outside views.

We're not doing uplighting since our reception will be starting at 4:30 and ending at 9:30 (or whenever people leave, which could be earlier since it is a Monday). We figured that it would be silly since most of the reception will be when it's still light outside.

I'm torn on this as well. Originally I was firmly against it, because I was certain it would make it feel too clubby. We were going to do lots of candles as well, but we went to a wedding a few weeks ago with soft yellow uplighting and it was very classy. So were tossing it around now.

We're using amber uplighting (DJ package is $150 for 8) and we will have candle centerpieces (3 cylinders with floating candles) as well as tea light candles on the tables. I want the lights dimmed and uplighting for a romantic feel. It's at a beach resort but there are no windows so we definitely need lighting.

The uplighting is beautiful, but we are not doing it simply because it is not in the budget. We are having tons of candles on the tables though, so hopefully that will help create a soft romantic feel for everything.

I intend to get those Starry String Lights and hang them, perhaps with tulle or something similar.
