Anyone else not having ushers???

Trista, on May 25, 2012 at 9:08 AM Posted in Planning 0 36

FH and I are getting married at an indoor park in the ampitheatre. We are not having ushers because we didnt really think we needed them and honestly we couldn't think of anyone to fill that duty as FH has no siblings and most of his close friends live out of state and probably won't be attending. I also don't really have anyone on my side I could think of either. I've gotten some shocked reactions from people and comments that they can't believe we aren't having ushers. I am planning on just doing a cute sign letting guests know they may seat themselves.

Anyone else doing this??

That's my plan! *fingers cross* We're getting married at a hotel and I'm hoping they have enough wait staff and signs to accommodate our needs. I decided against them because I find that no one really wants to do that job host/hostess and having done it 3 times, it sucks!

I'm gonna play it by ear. If we need extras I may just reach out to a local college or HS and see if people are willing to volunteer for community hours.

I wanna make one of those cute signs that says, "Pick a seat, not a side. We're all family here!" No ushers for me, Smiley smile

I'm not having ushers, everyone is grown and can seat themselves. In fact, I've been to very few weddings that had ushers, now that I think about it...

I will not be having ushers or programs - we're keeping it short, sweet and to the point so I feel that there really isn't any need.

Umm we are thinking about having the groomsman seat people, is that terrible? It's just that our wedding party is 4 groomsmen, 5 bridesmaids and us, so already 11 people, we only have 70 people coming to the wedding (inlcuding the bridal party). So it seems wierd to have more people in the wedding party.

Haven't 100% decided yet, but I think we will not have ushers. I was planning on making a cute sign that I've seen online that says "Two families are becoming one, please choose a seat, no need to choose a side!" so people know they can sit wherever they like.

ETA: Sara D already said this! Sorry!

You don't have to have ushers. We had them, but we found that we wanted them for our particular situation. We didn't want the ushers to necessarily tell people where to sit. They handed out the program fans and the tears of joy hankies. More importantly, they walked our mothers down the aisle. At the end of the ceremony, one usher escorted MIL (who is single) and another escorted my grandmother (who is also single) for the recessional. That way the GM were still able to escort the BM for the recessional.

Our ushers also set up everything for our wine box ceremony, but you can have GM do that, too.

I'm not. I'm having a ceremony hostess and junior bridesmaids if that counts. I want as quick a ceremony as possible.

We are having ours at a hotel, and people will be seated at their dinner tables for the ceremony. We are going to do a sign as well that let's people know they can pick their own seat!

Thanks for all the responses!! I didn't think I was crazy but just had to check. Sometimes it's good to hear you aren't the only one doing something differently.

We're getting married in a church, so the formality has already been up'd with that. I really don't want to have ushers (I think it's so awkward as a guest... they take your arm, and your date has to walk behind you... weird)... do you think we could get away with not having them in a church?
