Anyone else the unofficial wedding planner for friends or coworkers?

Nonna T, on March 22, 2017 at 8:38 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 22

I have to say I love my job most of the time! I have helped one coworker plan his baseball themed wedding and currently helping two more, one of which is my first same sex wedding Smiley smile

Calling our department the "hotbed of love in engineering" we see many couples launched from here and get to help out and attend many weddings. One summer we had three!

One of my favorites is when Joe and I got to give away the groom. What an honor and privilege.

Anyone get called upon for help and advice? Do you love it? Or not so much?

Nonna T - that is so sweet of you.

To answer your question - I am not really good at planning my own wedding let alone helping a friend plan his/hers ( I wish!! haha) I feel like I would totally suck at it. :-/

Me! I'm a planner, so I get roped into things. I don't mind for the most part, it gives me an outlet for my ideas and creativity.

I wouldn't say I get asked to be the planner, but I do get asked for lots of tips and assigned lots of wedding-related projects, and I love it Smiley smile

Haha Richard I love it! @Nonna that sounds awesome. I've never been asked to wedding plan but I think once mine is over I'd love to help plan a wedding.

Richard, my crotchety old bil (self proclaimed, I think he is a lamb) told Joe and I we should go in to the biz.

I think you and I could whoop some arses in to gear, what do you think?

@Nonna - that's so cool that you got to be a big part of their life!

Coworkers ask questions about planning and I've even shared some of my planning tools (spreadsheets), but nobody has really used me as much as I would love to be used. I had a TON of fun planning my wedding and really want to help someone else do it!

I've been helping my best friend back home. She has a baby, works full time, and her FH works like 3 jobs. So I help send inspiration, started her a pinterest board lol

Found her bridesmaids dresses, which she chose to order one in white for her own dress, gave her flower suggestions, etc

It's fun! I love planning things, and it's a bonus that I get to help for one of my favorite people in the world. If we lived closer together, I would totally do more to help

My friend is getting married in July and since I'm the only other friend that has recently gotten married she asks me a ton of questions. I don't mind though, I feel like I'm steering her in the right direction.

Yes I've helped a few friends plan weddings before now planning ours. Most times I really love it. Creative outlet and I like to have things organized. Plus unlike our wedding, I don't have to make the final decision; just come up with a way to make it work.

The downside is when the help goes almost unappreciated. Not often, but if I'm saving you a couple hundred dollars with and idea or DIY-ing something, at least being respectful of my time is appreciated.

I have acted as DOC for a couple of my friends weddings. I offered as I like doing that stuff. Also it allowed me get all my bridezilla tendencies out way before my own wedding lol. Everyone says I should get into event planning but if its a job it won't be as fun

I love spending other people's money!

Was telling the bride about posting this and she said "Don't forget the high five picture!"

She has us recreate this for a photo. We thought to do this rather than an emotional kiss and hug when we reached the front of the aisle to lighten the mood (it was pretty tragic with his parents).

Yep, me too. I'm working on step-grandson's super tight budget, a friend's daughter's traditional and a friend from our country club's second marriage.

I have a business plan for a wedding "resource" center. It's a storefront for brides who are planning on their own. It has a wedding related library of current magazines and books, a computer center with a detailed database of local venues and vendors, high end printers, a large conference room and a smaller one. The large conference room doubles as a craft center where we provide access to craft equipment like Cricuts, etc. The revenue source is a monthly subscription. Personal services for non day-of activities (think invitation assembly, favour making, research, etc) would be available and the occasional DOC. We added value by planning vendor demos (no sales), consults for bridal party planning of other wedding related parties, and an experienced mediator. I've had the plan reviewed by the Small Business Administration and the feedback was really positive, I got approved for a $120,000 loan but I'm just not sure I'm ready to put in the time and effort to be a successful entrepreneur. One of the surprises I had in building the business plan is that within my county and all bordering counties, the number of courthouse weddings has fallen over the last 5 years and is less than 3% in my county and less than 12% in the surrounding rural counties.

With the insane number of emails that I sent to my wedding planner I'm not sure I could be on the receiving end of that! Planning the party would definitely be a fun time but dealing with crazy brides and their families would be stressful.

I have a coworker she's like my direct supervisor but we get along well. Have gone to each other's kids bday parties and to bars as well.

So she is invited to my wedding. She wasn't engaged but would always say to her bf when are we getting married, when she was drunk it was even more obvious.

My fiancé even felt bad for her guy like geez talk about no pressure.

Come this Valentine's Day, they finally get engaged. Shocked?! Not really but I am happy for her because I know it's what she wanted.

So of course now she's asking for help and I don't mind. I tell her get your budget going and a rough amount of guests. Is she, no she said how do I put on the invite that we don't want gifts since we live together?

I said did you decide on budget yet, she's like well I have a friend who's a caterer and another friend who is a photographer.

I said after myself learning it's not a good idea to use friends beachside what if something doesn't turn out well. She just brushed me off.

So I gave her my gift ( a planning binder homemade ) and said good luck.

So to answer your question Nonna I felt I tried but she's not there yet. She still is in the just engaged moment, so I feel she isn't open to the realness yet.

So I'm not helping her anymore. I have my own to stress about.

Another department wedding, with the bride, with a bridesmaid and J with the mother of the bride (or as she called us "co-mothers of the bride")
