Anyone had a D-I-Y Wedding Cake?

Faith, on October 3, 2015 at 5:03 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 28

I'm looking at the wedding cakes prices and I seriously wonder why do I spend so much for a 3-tier cream-coated cake that no one really eats at the end. I know some of the modern ideas are really creative and fun to look at, I'm really thinking if it's possible to buy a simple 1-tier cake, dress it up to match the wedding theme instead? Has anyone done that?

I'm sure you could - I was leaning that route or towards cupcakes but I want a three tier cake. I love the filling options and the first bakery we tried was so amazing.

I made pies for our wedding, but if I were going to have a cake, I wouldn't have made it myself. If you want a simple round cake, check out your grocery store bakery. I know that Market Basket in my area makes amazing cakes that can also be pretty simple, and Publix down south also has an amazing bakery that would do the same. You could get a small round cake and then a bigger sheet cake to feed more of your guests.

People do eat is, and really, you do not want to be making your own cake the week of your wedding when everything else is crazy.

Yeah, I forgot to say that I always eat the desserts at a wedding. I also feel like in almost every episode of Bridezillas, there's a girl plopping a box of cake mix on the table and then screaming at everyone about it.

How big is your wedding going to be? I think it'd be fine if you have a small wedding, but it needs to be enough to serve everyone. Most people do eat wedding cake.

Maybe purchase a few single tier cakes, or one single tier and some cupcakes. i have never heard anyone on here say that their DIY cake went well. you will have a billion other things to do that day and they day before..which is hen it would need to be made to be fresh. there are less expensive options for cakes. try sams club or even kroger, get a simple cake like you were saying and just add cute toppers

Have you thought of a fake 3 tier cake and then sheet cakes to serve?

We are having a 5 tier cake. 3 real and 2 fake because of the cake I chose it would look funny with 3 tiers. The fake tiers were only 15 each.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Somehow in Singapore, most of the wedding dinners i attended didn't have much people eating cakes at the end because they do serve other desserts that are much much better. Most usually they give out small squares of fruit cakes packed in boxes and you know it is not the same cake they cut earlier. This is the first time i'm attending an American wedding, and it's my wedding so i'm so lost.

Feel free to post questions on here if you're not sure what's typical for an American wedding! Most Americans want to at least try the wedding cake. Some people have a small cake for cutting and then serve cupcakes or cake from sheet cake in the back in order to reduce cost. Some people also do a dessert bar, which sounds similar to what you're describing, where there's some cake but there's also cookie or pie options as well. But the most standard practice is probably just to have the wedding cake (and possibly a groom's cake if you're in the South).

We DIY'd our wedding cake. My mum and I made it the week before the wedding. It wasn't too stressful because both of us love to bake and cook, and it was crazy fun decorating it. It wasn't very traditional, nor was it perfect by any means, but we got so many compliments on it. I think it can be done but only if you enjoy that kind of thing, and will think it fun rather than stressful. This was our cake, and I still love it even if it wasn't perfect.

Picture didn't attach first time. This also isn't the best picture of it, but I don't have my pro pics yet!

Oh wow! Nicola it's a nautica theme! Love the seashells and the blue color! You simply put the smaller tiers on top of each other or was there a bottom to hold the tiers up in place so that it doesn't sink into the centre of the bottom cake?

Hi Rebecca, it's going to be a small wedding of 50 people or less. So i suppose a nice big 1-tier cake suffice? I was thinking of getting edible butterflies to decorate a naked cake, since my FH's parent is diabetic and high cholesterol and i don't want them to skip the cake because of all that cream and fondant. I would love to bake my own cake but the issue is I am going to be in San Jose only 1 week before my wedding so already i have too many things on my plate, to get my gown altered, to try the caterer, to get the flowers, to check the wedding venue and to decorate it. And it is difficult for me to commit to many things over the net, i feel insecure not knowing how the cake taste like to order in advance. I am seriously thinking of popping by one bakery and asking them to make me a big square cake and i decorate it myself.

And seriously i have so many questions to ask. I am so confused about the dance thing, there's apparently 3 or 4 dances needed? Can i don't dance? Too old to shake those old bones dangerously haha...

At one wedding reception, they had a 2-layer cake on each table as a centerpiece. We chose our seat based on what kind of cake we wanted (each had a tag: chocolate cake with raspberry filling and white chocolate frosting, etc.). At dessert time, a guest at each table cut and served the cake! Oh, and each cake was on a vintage cake plate/pedestal borrowed from relatives.

I love the example if you know, that your guest list isn't to big go for it.

We saved ourselves a lot of extra work by simply baking three different types of cake that we could stack. Basically each type of cake was lighter than the last.

Hmmm... so when do you actually cut the cake? The Singaporean way was to have the cake cut before champagne popping and then the cake disappears into backstage for "distributing into small portions".

Check out Whole Foods. They have a really nice variety of fancy and normal flavored cakes. Get like 4 or 5, depending on your guest list, display them all on different coordinating stands and have your florist (or you) decorate them with flowers.

Ok i get it that we need to serve cakes at the wedding but really, is there an actual routine to follow, that includes "program highlights: cake cutting ritual" or something like that?
