Anyone hate their dress after it arrived?

Sci Fi Bride, on November 19, 2015 at 2:37 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 12

Help! I ordered my dress and it came in this week (shocking, it wasn't due til March) so since we were there doing bridesmaids dresses anyway they let me try it on. I don't like it. I don't like it at all. It draped completely differently when they had to clip me into the sample because you could fit three of me in it. I specifically said I didn't want a mermaid cut, one because my FH's first wife wore one, and two because it makes me feel like Morticia Addams. And now it looks like a mermaid cut. I don't want it hugging my butt and flaring at the legs. It was supposed to drape from my waist down, but it fits me well enough that I don't see how there's going to be any extra fabric to even change the cut of the dress if I were willing to pay out that much for an alteration. Everyone tells me I look fantastic in it, but I don't feel fantastic. My MIL says I look like a dream...it just feels like a really expensive nightmare.

I'm really sorry you don't love your dress. Mine hasn't come in yet so I have no real insight. Do you have a photo of it you could share?

It's a beautiful dress, I just don't like how it looks on me. And I can't find a shot of the backside on my camera, but it seems to fit each model differently online. Maybe my booty is a little wide? I've never been accused of having a big bum before.

Did they send you the wrong dress? That happens sometimes.

Did you see a photo of what the dress was supposed to look like before you bought it?

Oh my gosh. It really is absolutely stunning and I'm not just saying that. It's actually a little similar to mine. Have you talked with the alterations person to see if there is any way to make it drape differently? It would be so nice if you could make it work -- it is so pretty. I actually think I like it better than the one I got! Shit! hahaha

Jennifer - do you have a picture of you in the dress? That would really help us see what you're talking about?

If it helps, when my dress came in, I HATED IT! I cried in the change room. Some weird things were going on with the bodice. It was doing some weird bubbling and I hated it. HATE! HATE! HATE! But honestly, we did some alterations to it and it sat a lot better.

It may need some slight adjustments but I understand the feeling. I was so upset that I thought maybe I made the wrong choice. The day of the wedding I loved my dress. Like loved loved loved.

I will say this, if you had a "bridal" moment when you first tried on your dress and you didn't get it when your dress actually came in, don't worry, that is normal. I was also thinking when my dress came in, I would have had a bridal moment again, I didn't.

It's gorgeous! Maybe you just need some time because it doesn't fit like you thought it would. Would you mind sharing the designer/style #?

Allure 8800. I have to say, getting opinions from people who don't have a vested interest in not seeing me upset is helpful. I have pictures of trying on the sample, but was so taken aback by how the actual dress fit I didn't think to get my camera.

@jennifer - have you done a google image search for Allure 8800? I just did and it returned a lot of results of "real brides" trying the dress on:

    https://www.google.com/search?q=Allure+8800&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAmoVChMIiICNoq-dyQIVgiseCh0Qrw01&biw=1600&bih=775#imgrc=_

On the mannequin picture you posted it definitely looks like the dress is supposed to be more column style, flowing straight instead of fitting at the hips & thighs. On the google image results it totally varies, and fits lots of women tight in the hips & thighs (which you don't want). I'd see if they can let the dress out at all in those areas you mentioned.

Either way it's a gorgeous dress!

The dress looks like it should be more drapey than mermaid.

Perhaps they ordered a size a little too small for you?

And does it have any crinoline under the skirt? If so you could try removing it?

I love that dress! It's gorgeous, but at the end of the day if you don't love it and feel amazing girl in it that's what matters. I had the same thing happen. Bought a drss, when it came in my size it just didn't look as how it did when it was clipped. The bridal salon I worked with is amazing and they swapped it out for me. I am in LOVE with my new dress. My advice is DON'T settle! You only get this day once. I went to the bridal salon in tears and the lady had a heart and worked with me. Tell them how you feel - see if they will help you out. Or sell it on the Internet and find another one you love. Good luck!

The "sell it on the internet" advice is my least favorite, because literally every day I see posts in the Facebook group where people are trying to sell brand new dresses and having to reduce to rock bottom prices - like, $200-300 for $1500 dresses. If you truly hate it and need to do that, then go ahead, but just know it isn't easy to sell a wedding dress online. The market is saturated, women like to buy their dress in the salon and have the whole "bridal" moment, but every single time one of these posts pops up people are like "oh, just sell it!"

They are not easy to sell. There are plenty of brides on here that will share that info with you.

Your dress looks incredible, and looking at the Google image search even though it is more fitted in the hips on some models, I would never look at it and think it was a mermaid. Try it on again and take some pictures for us to see! And talk to them about whether they can loosen it up with alternations to make you feel more comfortable with the silhouette. It is a stunning gown!
