Anyone have a mariachi group at their wedding?

MandaSandwich, on February 1, 2016 at 5:33 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 12

My parents have indicated that they would like to have mariachi's at my wedding (though not a necessity) and I think it would be a nice touch to incorporate my Mexican heritage. I'm not sure when/where would be best to have them play. FH and I don't really want a group playing during the cocktail/dinner/reception time since we've hired a fairly pricey though amazing DJ and would like to utilize him a much as possible. My thought would be as we're leaving the church. I know this is sometimes done for Catholic weddings but we're getting married in Lutheran church. I'll be meeting with the coordinator this week and can ask if this is allowed. Are any of you having a group play and when?

I've seen several of them recently, and I just love it. Usually they are at the cocktail hour. Could your dj do less hours?

(PS: it goes over really, really well!)

Mariachi bands unreasonably give me extreme anxiety. I don't know why.

ETA. I'm 190% a weirdo and most people love them.

We did...I wasn't 100% sure about it, but it was important to my FH and his family so I went with it without voicing any concern. SO GLAD I did...it was actually pretty awesome! I originally thought it would be great to have during the cocktail hour so they could roam, etc. but FH wasn't completely on board with that because it would have meant he and I would have missed it completely and his parents would have missed alot of it during family photos following the ceremony. We decided to go with this schedule (and I hear what you're saying about the DJ, it was a concern of ours as well...) We were announced into the reception and went straight into our first dance. Immediately following, the DJ played a song as we were being seated at the sweetheart table (which happened to be near the bottom of a very grand staircase), once the mariachi band was in place, the coordinator signaled the DJ to fade the song and the Mariachi began on the landing of the staircase...so it was mostly a surprise to our guests and it was AWESOME! They then continued down the stairs and played in the main ballroom for us. It was beautiful and I can't wait to see the pics. We had them play one entire song with everyone's attention before the coordinator began releasing tables to the buffet for the meal. We knew going in we probably wouldn't want them to play for an entire hour even though we had to pay for an hour, because we really wanted to move our reception along and get to the dancing (and use the DJ we'd paid for that really wasn't doing anything while the mariachi was there) so around maybe 40 minutes in, FH had his dad signal the band to play their last song and that was that. It was really great and I'm so glad we decided to do it.

ETA: LOL, I just realized I'm still referring to my HUSBAND as FH in my posts! Woops Smiley smile

I coordinated a wedding that had one and it was amazing. The guests loved it. My couple did 99% of their pictures before the ceremony. The mariachi band appeared at the end of the ceremony and led the guests in a roundabout path to the cocktail hour with the couple in the lead. As the guests were leaving the ceremony area, my staff and I handed out maracas in the colors of the wedding. The band stayed and played during cocktail hour while the couple finished pictures and came back and enjoyed the music. The band faded out just before the grand entrance and the DJ picked up.

I went to a wedding in Nicaragua that had a mariachi band come out in the middle of the bride and groom's first dance (after dinner, after the dance floor was officially opened).

    We did! Smiley laugh

It was awesome! They played during our ceremony! The mariachis led the way down the aisle at our outdoor garden courtyard wedding (it was a winding walk until you got to the actual aisle) They played some awesome fanfare music and the groom walked in behind them with his parents, followed by the groomsmen. It was fantastic! Everyone was clapping and dancing.

They then played Pachelbel's Canon in D for the bridesmaid and a calm Here Comes the Bride for me played on the mariachi strings. SO BEAUTIFUL!

Our reception was in the same place. the mariachi band played a few more songs during cocktail hour while we took pictures, and then the DJ picked up with dinner and mood music until the dancing.

It was so wonderful and everyone loved it! Smiley laugh

We are! They'll be playing pre-ceremony, DJ will take over for actual ceremony, then in cocktail hour, DJ will take over for first dance, and then for like half of dinner while people are being served before toasts, and then the DJ from there on out. Now I'm sure that's a lot more than what you are envisioning based on your post, but just some ideas for how you can incorporate them Smiley smile

We are having our mariachi play during the ceremony and then a few hours at the reception hall before the dj. We have them planned for 1 hour at the mass, and 3 hours at the reception hall.
