Anyone made their own cake topper using a 3D printer?

Cavan, on August 15, 2011 at 9:51 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 5

I found the perfect cake topper but it will cost us $250, way out of our price range. So, my FH wants to try to make his own cake topper using a 3D printer. Has anyone ever done this? We know someone with a printer and my FH is a 3D artist but I am nervous that it will look like poop. And it will still cost us $10 per square inch. So, I'm thinking in the end we will only be saving $50 but spending hours of work designing it.

But, it is something my FH wants to be involved in and he hasn't wanted to be involved in much wedding planning.

Ideas? Thoughts?

Honestly, if you're only going to save $50 doing it yourself, with out the guarantee it turns out nice, I'd just spend the $250 on the other cake topper. What does it look like? Perhaps I can do some digging and see if I can find something simular for less.

Thanks FMS! I have tried looking but can't find anything much cheaper and as well done. Someone on another discussion suggested this site for cake toppers and I fell in love with the idea. They are Mii figures from the Nintendo system.

If it's something he really wants to do, you need to ask him what the plan is if it doesn't turn out, as you already spent $200 on one attempt.

I personally don't think that the cake topper is that big of a deal. I think that it's his wedding too and if he has this heart set on this then you should let him do it. Just be clear that you want to have some say in how it looks.
