Anyone make their own invites in Word? Where did you print?

Melissa, on January 28, 2015 at 5:18 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

Hey ladies!

After many hours of looking at wedding invitations online, I have yet to find something I absolutely love that is in my price range. So I've contemplated making my own in Microsoft Word, then converting to a PDF and printing them somewhere. Has anyone done something like this? Is it worth the savings and hassle to DIY? Any advice or suggestions is greatly appreciated! Thanks! Smiley smile

If you know how to use InDesign or Illustrator (or even Photoshop) you can download a trial version for 30 days for free. I used InDesign to design everything for the wedding, and did it for free.

Also if you save it as a high quality .jpeg, I would just print at VistaPrint. I was going to print at home but it came out no cheaper and quite a bit harder.

I did my own invites or shall i say, will be doing. I've already made the design and will be printing and cutting at home.

For me, the hardest part was deciding what to use in my design. What font. To use two different fonts or to use only one. What colors.

You would be amazed at what you can accomplish in word with graphics. I made mine in Word and designed my pocketfolds in word. I had to transfer my invite design to my Silhouette Design studio for printing and cutting though.

Honestly, it can be A LOT of work doing them yourself. I don't think printing them at home will cost you much. I buy aftermarket ink and it works just fine and prints hundreds of pages.

I know for me, it was tough making a decision on what design to use or how to use it. I had so much control over what i was doing that i had TOO MANY designs i wanted to use. lol

I'd suggest using either the Adobe Suite stuff mentioned or Microsoft Publisher to make them instead - they'll likely have an invitation template you can work off of. Then save as a jpeg and use a printing company (ie: visaprint, office max, etc)

Have you tried Googling free invitation templates?http://www.weddingchicks.com/freebies/invitation-suites/

I did mine in word and had them printed and cut at staples. I can't recommend Staples enough. I looked around and researched prices and they had the best prices. In addition, I had the greatest experience with them. I could tell the entire story about what happened, but the long and short of it is that they misprinted them and so they reprinted them all, and they charged me nothing for everything. So I ended getting my invitations and RSVPs for free. They were fantastic to work with.

Another little helpful hint: Michaels has great quality cardstock. 100 sheets for 12.99 of the 110 lb cardstock. You get a 40% off coupon, and you are GOLDEN. That's what I did for all my wedding stuff- our menus, programs, etc. Awesome paper.

Check our Canva.com if you aren't already sold on MS Word.

Did you ladies print 2 invites or multiples per page? If so, how did you format it?

I made mine in Photoshop with a 5x7 template, then uploaded them to print with Vistaprint. You can upload a psd file, layered and everything. They turned out amazing!! I am so happy with them.

I designed mine in Microsoft Publisher. And I am getting them printed from Cards and Pockets. I wouldn't recommend word because the program really isn't designed for that. But designing yourself is definitely doable if you have the time and basic design skills.

I am doing my own. If you have MS Publisher as part of your Office Suite, I would use that instead of Word. If gives you a little more flexibility. If not, like others have suggested, I would figure out what you want (download some fonts, play with it in word, etc), then when you get a good idea, download the free trial of Adobe and create it there. SO much easier than Word!

As far as printing, we are having a friend print ours for us through his company. But I also checked at Office Max, and I would be printing them there if not for our friend. Their prices are reasonable, they will cut them for a very small fee, and they seemed great to work with.

My invites are roughly 5x7, and I'm printing 2 per page.

I would second using publisher instead of word. I just printed them through Vistaprint. If you want to print them, yourselves, just make sure you have a reliable printer that can print them thick enough. Our printer couldn't handle the paper we got for our Save the Dates, so we had to print them all from my mom's house.

I used word for mine. They are double sided folded cards. What took me the longest was getting the format that I wanted figured out. I mostly got it done in a day.

I made my own and printed them with a local printer. I had the same problem. I couldn't find a design that seemed to fit the style and theme of my wedding, so I designed them myself.
