Anyone still getting married despite Formal wedding postponed?

Octavia, on March 17, 2020 at 8:59 AM Posted in Planning 2 26
Hi Everyone,

I know with the COVID-19, a lot of brides are in the same boat of having to ultimately postpone their wedding. I’m curious, my FH and I decided that if our wedding is postponed, we will still get married that date and just push the formal ceremony/reception to another day.
We are hoping our venue works with us, but that’s another issue. So, are any other brides doing the same? If your formal wedding gets postponed, still getting married in courthouse or whatnot?

I will say that it’s possible that courthouses will close. I know that we met about that yesterday for the county where I work and the commissioners are considering it, so it may not be possible to get marriage licenses for a time. That said, if this is still an issue come October and the courthouses are open, that’s our plan. We’ll get married in our living room or at the courthouse and have the ceremony when everything blows over.

That’s our plan - we pushed our 5/9 wedding to 8/1 - if we can get a marriage license (right now city hall is closed), we will elope on 5/9 and make the rescheduled date the big party!

We peeked into eloping, and we might go ahead- my mom got herself ordained online. But if we do that, it'll be because we got our license well in advance. In Dallas the courthouses will be closed until at least April.

I’m in the DFW area, so I may need to check with my local courthouse to see the earliest to get our marriage license.

We had a long day of being sad on Sunday - woke up yesterday, got ahead of the reschedule rush... and after about 6 hours had everything moved and what felt like a ton of weight and stress off our shoulders.

    It’s gonna be ok everyone!

We will be legally married through court recommended civil celebrant. We already have our license and have to be married by May 5th or it will expire and we will have to get a new one.

My wedding was may 30, 2020 and we cancelled yesterday due to trumps speech about things not getting better till July/August. We didn’t pick another date yet for our wedding, but we are thinking sometime next year because this pandemic could last longer than expected. July/August is the best case scenario if everyone’s contributes to social distancing in the nation. So I would recommend canceling and not picking another date just yet. We are all being inconvenienced: businesses, weddings, everything. But we have to be inconvenienced if we want our nation to get better by social distancing. Also we are getting married in the courthouse in April, if you wanna get married in the court you should book your appointment now because for some reason the availability is low.

We've decided on the same thing. We're getting married come hell or high water, even if it means we put off the party awhile. Most likely we would push it out a year and make it a vow renewal with everyone attending. As much as that would suck, I wouldn't actually mind too much because that would mean that my dad would probably be well enough to attend by then (he's currently being treated for congestive heart failure, but responding well to treatment).

This is true. If it looks like that will happen, we will probably go get our license early so we will have it, just in case. And then ask one of our friends to get ordained online so they can officiate, and a couple other friends to be witnesses.

That’s a good idea. Just make sure you know the law in your state so you know how long the license is valid!

That is exactly what I am doing. We are doing a small, immediate family ceremony and dinner at my Mom's house and then will postpone the formal wedding and switch it to a vow renewal. Plus then I get to wear my dress twice!! Our date is Saturday, March 21 in Nashville, TN though.

If you plan on going to the courthouse, call and go now. I work in the local courthouse and, in Tenn, the Supreme Court has cancelled all in person proceedings (except emergencies).

We’re still going to get married on 4/25 as long as we can get ahold of a marriage license in KY! We just don’t know how many people we can have there or what that will look like

We are still getting married on april 18th. We don't know about the reception. But for us the important thing is to get married. We need something happy right now.

We are getting married 4/18 and had to postpone our wedding. We actually went to the courthouse today because the license is valid for 60 days while it is still open. Our original courthouse had shutdown so we went to another county. We are in Pa so as long as we get married somewhere in Pa it will be valid. We also opted for a self-uniting that way we do not need to have an officiate. We plan to still formally get married on the 18th with just our immediate family and will just push back our celebrations to a later date.

We postponed our 4/18 wedding in CA! Devastating, but we knew we had to. We made sure to get a marriage license last week when the news was getting bad, and we plan on marrying on 4/18 with just our parents present. My FH’s aunt is marrying us (for both the 4/18 wedding along with our postponed ceremony and reception.) The big “if” is what 4/18 looks like — I’d love to be able to still carry a bouquet, maybe for to the beach, but with how fast the news is changing I don’t think we will know until a few days before

Hello! Our wedding was supposed to be April 17th and it was postponed by our venue as well. As of right now we are still able to get married by the church on that day and then do a second ceremony and reception in June. The courthouse near me is closed for public right now, so if we can't in April then I guess we will just have to do everything in June Smiley sad

Our wedding is 4-4 and we decided we will get married even if the big event gets cancelled. Right now our venue and most vendors would work with us where we wouldn’t be out a ton of money if we decide to postpone, only problem is they don’t have any dates until way far out. So we are just waiting until the last minute to decide. I hate everyone is going through this, but it is nice to know you aren’t alone. Good luck!
