Anyone take the "mini pill" ?

ChampagneDream, on May 11, 2014 at 8:31 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 14

All this preg talk this morning has me even more concerned about finding an BC alternative since the Mirena failed.

Anyone take the mini pill? I'm considering this now and would love some input.

I have a history of migraines with auras so the mini pill is the only one I can take. I've been on it about 6 months and its fine, but my period it's very unpredictable now. I really hate that aspect but other than that it's okay.

Niecy- mini pill is a bc pill with progestin only. Estrogen can increase the odds of stroke in migraine patients so that's why I'm on it but it's also recommended for breast feeding women

Champagne- I have lost weight recently but it's hard to tell if that it's because of the pill our other circumstances, and my sex drive is great but I wouldn't say it was lacking on the combo pill. It is probably slightly better now though

@ starlight thanks for the advice.

I'm nervous that I have to take it at the EXACT time every day. Are you good about that? I usually take my combo between 5 and 8 in the Am. Is that too far apart for mini pill? What time do you take yours?

I didn't like it. My biggest complaints were breast tenderness (major) and acne. I also gained weight, but I can't be sure if that is bc of the mini pill or bc I went off of the combo pill. I know most people gain weight w bcps but not me. My migraines are so much worse without the combo pill that I can't function (let alone hit the gym) for about 7-10 days a month. I'm fighting with my gyno now to put me back on the combo pill. She wants me to try Mirena. May I ask why you say Mirena failed?

I was nursing my now 16 month old when I was taking the mini pill and now I'm 31 weeks pregnant. It's a very strict pill and I followed all the rules. You literally have to take it the same time everyday and can't miss a pill and it's more effective when nursing. My nursing habits changed and I got pregnant. If you're not breast feeding or have some reason to HAVE to be on a progesterone only pill I wouldn't recommend it.

Champagne that's way too far apart. Like literally the same 30 min window.

@ MrsS - I have been dying to get off the pill and my FH, gyno, and I decided that the Mirena would be a great choice. I haven't had babies and even though I took Cytotec she had to probe and probe (ridiculously painful) and couldn't get it placed. I don't think this is a typical so don't worry about this happening. My cervix is just really "tight" :-/ now considering other options.

Thanks for all the info. I may consider a choice other than this since its so unreliable with even a tiny variance of times. Damn it!

Thanks Champagne dream. I too have a small cervix so I'm afraid of the same issue.

I'm on the Depo shot. You get a shot every 3 months. I haven't had any issues with it but it did cause my cousin to gain weight. It was the best option for me because my insurance sucks and it was the cheapest method. Also because I don't have to remember to take a pill everyday!

I have migraines with auras, too, so was on mini pill for years. It was fine, but my period was totally unpredictable and because I wasn't always exactly perfect about taking it at the same time each day, it made for lots of nervous times when I though I might be pregnant. I also thought it hurt my sex drive, though that might have been just not wanting to have sex with my ex anymore, ha!

I'm on mirena now, I had a horrible insertion, too, but once it was in, it's nice to just never really think about it. I know you had problems with Mirena, though.

I do NOT recommend the Mirena!! i had it for 3 1/2 years..and with that no periods, gained 15 lbs (even tho i eat super healthy and exercise daily) loss of libido, mood swings just to make a new things, i had it removed 3 wks ago today and i feel a million times better..i am no longer putting my body thru the birth control terror that i have been going thru over the years!!
