Anyone thinking of using sola flowers do it! I have some tips

NatHam, on March 23, 2017 at 11:58 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 19

I am in the beginning stages of making my bouquets and let me tell you I love it. If you want something different go with sola flowers. I bought a ton of "raw" (uncolored) sola flowers from saveoncrafts. I started dying them a couple weeks ago and was very discouraged. The color wasn't what I wanted and the paint wasn't dissolving like I planned. So I let them dry and I bought the cheap 50 cent a tube acrylic paint from Wal-Mart and tried it with slightly warm water. And hello. It was perfect. Mixed awesome and didn't leave little chunks of paint on my flower. So if you are interested buy a few and try them out. Fun to work with and fairly cheap. Use slightly warm water when you mix in your paint and start with a little water and add more to your desired color. I wanted a plum color and did a darker purple to get plum as my end result. Try it!!!! And if you have any tips for me I will take them.

Here was my first time trying. Looks okay but not as great as cheaper paint with warm water.

Wow those look great! I cheated and just bought them already dyed. How much did you pay for your natural ivory ones if you don't mind me asking? And how many did you get?

The sizes and flower varied in price, but I paid anywhere from $5.99-$7.99 for 12 flowers. Right now I have about 75, since I lost some :/ I am planning on starting with these and buying more when I try putting the bouquets together.

I can't decide if I want to try dying them or just keep ordering from the etsy shop. I need about 40 more I think but I don't want to get the color wrong. Also ran out of baby's breath so I gotta pick more up tonight and dry it before I can start another one. But I'm happy with the way they are turning out. Smiley smile

I seriously love yours! Inspiration for sure. You could try dying some, I think it may be hard to get that color exactly unless you knew what paint they used. I have had a lot of trial and error with paint lol and the color doesn't turn out as vibrant as I think.

you have been drying your own babys breath, that is such a GREAT idea instead of buying it. Where do you buy it from and how do you dry it? I bet its a little cheaper.

Thank you! I just bought more from etsy and I think what I just got should be enough to finish them. I buy my baby's breath from a farmer's market store where I live in Lansing. And drying it is super easy. Basically just hang it upside down for about a week and also spray with hairspray for added preservation. I get a large bundle for $12 and that went into 3 bouquets. You could probably order from Sam's club or some other bulk place like that too.

Ladies your flowers are beautiful!! I also would love to use sola flowers but ALL of the websites are out of stock! Any tips on other sites that you found them at? Save on crafts only has like one style left. Etsy I feel is a bit pricey for what I want to spend. I'm going to need about 1000 flowers for my project :/ Help!

I started with save on crafts and was disappointed how much shipping was. So then I bought the rest from solawoodflowers.com. Super great customer service and usually pretty fast shipping. I found that all the sites are around the same price... if you want to use fillers I bought all those from curiouscountrycreations.com. great quality

Do you know how many of each flower you used for a bouquet?

@Melissa dried flowers? Or sola flowers? I didn't use much for dried between all the bouquets and it really depends if you want more sola flowers or fillers. I would say my bouquets each have around 30 sola flowers

Hello! My fiancé and I are going to say our sola flowers for the wedding. Super excited to do this ourselves! My question is how close to the wedding should I start fluffing and dying? Also how should I store my dyed flowers before making them into bouquets and centerpieces?

    Rebecca!

So excited you are going to use sola flowers! I started about 10 months before because I mainly worked on it when I had free time. When you fluff and dye them they will stay that way forever after if stored right. I made my bouquets and then put them in vases to store until the wedding. I would store the flowers in a box or tupperware. I would just make sure they are 100% dry first because they have been known to mold.
