Anyone using all black linens or been to a wedding with black linens?

Angie, on January 29, 2011 at 10:38 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 12

Hi,

I'm using black tablecloths with black chair covers and fuschia sashes and napkins. My questions are: for anyone doing anything similar or have been to a wedding recently with a lot of black, did you worry it was too much black? What was everyone's reaction? My thought is most people my age like black but some of the older guests will think funeral...

Also, what did you do about the head table, cake table and gift table? My thoughts right now are black fabric draping on the head table, and possibly a black overlay for the cake table...

I'm probably overthinking this but any opinions/advice will be appreciated...

I'm doing black table cloths, with some lavender runner thingies on them (our colors are black, lavender, and silver). I believe our chair covers are white and some of the longer tables will be white. My BMs are wearing all black dresses with *hopefully* lavender shoes and lavender bouquet... I know to some it will be alot of black but thats how we want it. Smiley smile I've heard one of my grandmas say its not "traditional" but whatever, I like it, so I'm going with it! Good luck!

I'm doing black table cloth, damask runners and white chairs, with red accenting pieces (centerpieces, etc).

I think the black linens with the balck chair covers is too much. I'd add something- maybe a sheer silver overlay.

But it also depends on your venue, centerpieces and tmie of day. I think all black for an afternoon wedding is a bit dismal, but an evening event with elegant uplighting can be very pretty.

The reception will be in the evening, we will have ceiling draping that will have lights in it was well and it's at a golf club so it's surrounded by big windows all around...

If you are worried about too much black, just add more pink, or even white accents to it to lighten things up a bit.

Then I think you're okay. I'd do some candle centerpieces (or aquabrights) to provide some light on the tables and brighten it up a bit.

But think romantic restaurant setting. They very often do black table cloths and dim lighting. It sets a great mood!

Thanks, I am actually having candles on my centerpieces, (3 cylinder vases with rose floating on a mirror)

I think the black & black will look awesome, I'm just a *little* worried about some of the older guests, oh well though I guess.

Do you guys think black fabric swagged on the front of the head table (which has the white skirting and tablecloths) will be enough to pull it together?

It will be all about the accent colors. Buy colored candles (test any cheap candles to make sure they'll stay lit, and either smell good or don't smell at all), a bolt of fabric to make runners or squares for part of the tables (the right fabric can even become disposable napkins), see if you can find inexpensive plate chargers (maybe just for the head table and maybe family tables), or look for funky placemats that could become centerpiece bases (example: http://www.robertbenda.com/clients/images/decorationssplashofcolor01.jpg), make sure you get plenty of ribbon to accent random items around the tables (favors, candles, etc.).

I personally love black, but depending on the rest of the decor, it may be a little dark overall. Maybe fuchsia runners on the tables. I don't mind a black head table at all...

We are having a LOT of black in our reception. Black linens galore! But it fits us. David's totally inlove with Johnny Cash who was known for wearing all black all the time and I think black is VERY slimming Smiley winking

We're accenting with red, white and lots of mirrors to brighten the room a bit Smiley smile

Our colors are black, silver, and apple green. So our chair covers are black, with silver sheer sashes, our table linens are black satin, with the exception of our sweetheart table and the cake table and they are black sequin like! I was a little worried about the darkness of everything but our flowers are white with hints of green and silver, and there will be lots of candlelight so I think it will balance it all out. Plus we will have up lighting so I think that will help too.

When you look at color, you need to consider light. Consider how many windows, and the time of year. How controllable is the room lighting? How low are the ceilings? Black linens could look great, or they could turn your reception space into a cave.

One other note: Recent wedding, venue is all ambers and dark reds. Bride and groom chose white linens and teal chair sashs. The teal looked horrible in the room. Worse, the groomsmen's vests were also teal. They looked like furniture. The best way (although most time consuming) to choose colors is to take samples to the venue both at daytime (if necessary) and at night to see how things will look.
