Applying for a marriage license - parents' info

Just, on May 5, 2021 at 11:06 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9
Getting ready to apply for a marriage license and the application is asking for my parents' info. I don't know my father, and I've been estranged from my mother for over a decade. Is adding their info to my application in any way optional?

I would call the county clerk. From what I recall, you needed their names and birth place. The names can be taken off of your birth certificate. If your dad isn't listed on the birth certificate, then you may not need his info.

It's really up to the agency in the county issuing your marriage license. Everywhere has different rules and requirements. For the most accurate answer, you should call directly and ask. How one person answers on here for their county may differ from the rules in your county.

Like others have mentioned, you will need to call where you are you getting your marriage license to find out what they require. We had to provide our parents' names, date of birth and place of birth when we got our marriage license.

I had to put “unknown” for my bio father in my first marriage. Later I actually had a copy of my birth certificate and that had his name and place of birth.

Yeah, you'll have to call your county clerk's office and see what they say. In my county the parent info is required and needed their name at birth and the county they were born in. But unlike in Veronica's case, we didn't have to provide their birth dates. Sadly this isn't a "one answer fits all" deal.

Wow this is great info, my dad didn’t sign my birth certificate and I remember helping my best friend do her certificate. It made me wonder about what to put if you have zero info on a parent!

Call the county clerk office where you will be applying for your marriage license only they can give you an accurate answer. I had to call them because my birth certificate doesn’t have a raised seal and they verified that was ok for me but I had to call to know.
