Are any of you booking your honeymoon through Airbnb?

Ashley S., on June 15, 2017 at 10:50 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 26

So, I've been looking for a place we can rent for our honeymoon, and found some great rates on Airbnb, but I have never used it. Have you guys used it in the past with luck? How exactly does it work? I'm so confused!

I've used it a bunch, and we will be staying in one for part of the honeymoon.

As far as how it works, you make an account and then request to book. Some are set up for instant booking, so you just click through and it is immediately reserved. Other owners want to vet each potential guest, so you write your request and wait for them to answer.

I looked into it, but I didn't like the idea of staying in people's regular houses and any of the really mind blowing places were much more expensive than a fancy hotel, so we just went with fancy hotel instead.

It is a great service. It really depends on the area you're looking at, sometimes the "nicer" Airbnbs are even more expensive than a hotel. Keep in mind you'll be responsible for your meals at an Airbnb, while a hotel might have complimentary breakfast, etc, and that's something you should factor in. Make sure you also pay attention when you're reserving to reserve a "whole home" instead of just a room. Wouldn't want to share space with "roommates" on your honeymoon!

Well we have been looking at condos in Destin. I have found some really nice ones where we would be alone at a great rate. I just don't know about staying in someones home and all that.

Honestly, there are pluses and minuses. It's great to have more space than you would in a hotel room. It's nice to be able to cook your own food, or even just have a full size fridge where you can stash some beer and local fruit. You have a bit more privacy than you would in a hotel. For me personally, I enjoy having somewhere to come *home* to while on vacation.

Downsides are service-related things. There won't be daily housekeeping service. You can't just ask the concierge to get you dinner reservations or call you a cab the way you can at a hotel. No room service. That sort of stuff. FH is kind of a diva, so we are doing the first week of the honeymoon in a fancy hotel so he can feel pampered.

I looked at Airbnb and VRBO for our honeymoon and found a better price/options on VRBO for my particular area. Like people above stated, you have to consider that an Airbnb will not have all of the amenities that you would get a hotel and you will be responsible for clean up.

I used VRBO because we are just going to the beach for our honeymoon, but FH has a list of sever food allergies and eating at a resort is basically impossible. So we splurged on renting a luxury beach front condo with a kitchen so we can cook our own meals Smiley smile The process was super easy - my renter did not have instant booking so we emailed some info back and forth before booking. Just be careful of people that want payment in any suspicious ways.

We booked what looked like a great place in Italy, only to receive a cancellation notice a few weeks later.

Read the reviews - and only go to places wth lots of good reviews. I've had awesome experiences including a cute loft we stayed in the weekend we got engaged!

I have stayed at one Airbnb in NY and it went well! you just have to do research on the place and the people you are renting from..we are doing an Airbnb for our honeymoon to Mexico and I found the guy we are renting from on fb so I feel more comfortable that we are not getting scammed. we didn't want an all inclusive and just want to be able to do our own thing. Also, this same place was listed on VRBO

We have used VRBO for some family vacations and had no issues. I think for our HM we want less worry and to be pampered so we will be going with a hotel/resort.

@StPaulGal yeah, my FH is the same way. He likes the complementary breakfast, lol

@Nonna Nooo!!! That sucks! That would be something I would be afraid of.

@MrsWrs I've never heard of VBRO, are they any good??

I have used Airbnb for a recent trip to Florida. I will be using it for the hotel on our honeymoon. We plan to be out and about so I am ok with Airbnb. If it was more of a relaxing vacation I would book a hotel for the amenities

I use Airbnb all the time when I travel -- I've had great results internationally, less so in the US.

    1. Reviews are key -- I don't risk staying at places that have middling reviews or no reviews at all, especially if the price seems too good to be true.

    2. If I'm only staying in a city for one or two nights, I will likely get a mid-priced hotel instead of Airbnb unless I find a real gem.

I've had a lot of great experiences, especially when I'm in a different country and I get to stay in a residence that reflects more of how people in that country live rather than a generic chain hotel. It's also nice if you're staying somewhere for several days, that way you can take advantage of the full living space, especially the kitchen. Also a lot of times you can find Airbnbs that are in prime locations of a city, whereas a hotel in the same location would most likely be charging top dollar. Overall, I definitely recommend.

We're going to Scotland for our honeymoon and will likely stay in Airbnbs in Edinburgh and London (which we're hitting on the way out) because they're our longer stops, and then staying in traditional bed and breakfasts for our 2 night stops throughout the Highlands and Skye.

I'm all for AirBNB. I freaking love it, actually. I'm definitely a clean freak and feel weird about staying in strangers' homes but just check out the reviews, the owners' profiles, and choose "private home" so you're completely alone.

It ultimately depends on where you're going. FH and I are getting married in Kauai and spending a week, total there, and then spending an additional week on the Big Island as an extended honeymoon. AirBnB proved to be more cost effective, for both islands, and the home we are staying at on the Big Island is basically a magical, jungle treehouse, which makes the experience unique. So if you find a fun, unique home, it could be an awesome opportunity, or if cost is a concern, it may be a more budget way to travel. Also as others have mentioned, one of the cons is that you don't get all of the amenities and services of a traditional hotel, but if you could care less about those things, then go for the AirBnB.

I have used AirBnB tons of times and haven't had a bad experience yet. Just do your research, read the reviews, and read the house rules, and any other policies the home owner has on their listing to make sure the home will work. Good luck!

We used it in Stockholm Sweden and it was great. I have a co-worker who uses it all the time, and has never had a bad stay.

My FH cousin used AirBnb for their honeymoon to Scotland. They had an amazing experience. As other's mentioned- reviews are definitely key. We are using it during our NYC stay as well in August. Everyone I know that has used it has had a great experience. I would definitely go for it.

I'm glad there's so many good experiences! We haven't booked one before but DH booked one for the two nights of the bar exam so I wouldn't have to drive 2+ hours each way in rush hour traffic while under stress. Hotels would have literally been $400+ a night because that's what it costs in Boston in July (to be fair, I had some location/noise restrictions) but we found an Airbnb for $250 total.

We are. We can't afford the nice hotels on the Greek Islands and I wanted a "local" feel rather then a "hotel" feel.
