Are Charger Plates for decoration only?

Decoration only

Chargers are only for decoration and not used for eating. Some chargers aren't even food safe.

Decoration only. Many people skip them because they serve no function.

Unlike previous posters I think you can eat off them, some people do this... this is the proof there are no hard and fast rules:

Not only are the majority of them NOT food safe (especially the shiny gold ones like you have pictured), it is also not proper dining etiquette. Charger plates are meant to protect tablecloths by capturing food pieces and preventing spills, and also to help retain the heat of dinnerware, in addition to elevating the formality of the meal.

View Quoted Comment I don’t know why this picture is “proof” though, as there’s no food on them and this is typically how chargers are set up. They exist to decorate the place setting. When dishes are served, they’re then brought out on their own plates, the menus are picked up, and the plates are placed on the chargers.
